2012 Mock NBA Draft
Its very early, but two Long Islanders are predicted to be taken in the 2012 NBA Draft by nbadraft.net.
They are Hills West's Tobias Harris at #14 and Hempstead's Terrell Holloway at # 59! If you remember, two Long Islanders were chosen in the 2009 draft: Danny Green and AJ Price! MOCK DRAFT

Good News On AJ Price!
Amityville's A.J. Price, who had a solid rookie season for the Indiana Pacers, has recovered much sooner than expected after suffering an offseason knee injury back in May while playing in a charity game here on Long Island. Price, who hopes to challenge for the starters role at point guard this season, was originally expected to be out of action possibly through November, but has already been cleared by the Pacers and will be ready for the start of training camp in October.

Antoine Agudio Update
Former Hofstra and Walt Whitman Star Antoine Agudio played for the Albuquerque Thunderbirds of the NBA's D-League last season, averaging 15.1 PPG. He played for the Milwaukee Bucks Summer League team, but wasn't invited to training camp and signed with Verviers-Pepinster of the Belgian Pro League.

Young Makes Redskins
Darrel Young, a captain of the 2004 and 2005 Amityville Long Island Championship teams and an All-League and All-County selection, made the Washington Redskins NFL team as a Linebacker!

Claxton Calls It Quits
Hempstead's Speedy Claxton signed a deal with the Golden State Warriors for the upcoming season, but as a scout, signaling the end of his injury plagued 10-year NBA playing career. Claxton was at his best from 2003 to 2006, when he averaged 11.5 points and 5.3 assists for the Warriors and Hornets, mostly coming off the bench. Those numbers earned him a free agent contract with the Atlanta Hawks, who wanted him to step into their starters role at the point, but a series of injuries limited his playing time and cut short his promising career.

Long Island NBA Update
A.J. Price of Amityville had a strong rookie season for the Indiana Pacers, averaging 7.3 points and 1.9 assists in only 15.4 minutes per game.  Price's playing time steadily increased throughout the year, jumping from an average of 8 minutes per game in the season's first two months to almost 20 minutes per game by April. Price will be in the second year of his two-year guaranteed rookie contract in 2010-11, which means that he'll be playing for his NBA life.  He could very well have a breakout season.
Danny Green of North Babylon didn't play very much for the Cleveland Cavaliers, which wasn't too surprising considering that he was competing for minutes with someone by the name of Lebron James.  Green's strongest stretch came in January and February, when he averaged 3.6 points per game on 58% shooting over 7 games.  On the whole, though, Green spent much more time in a suit than he did on the court.  Fortunately for him, the whole Lebron thing might not be as much of a problem next year.
Mike James, also of Amityville, struggled through an injury-plagued 2009-10 in which he played only four games for the Washington Wizards and averaged 4.5 points per game.  James, who was in his second season with Washington, was bought out and waived by the club after they were unable to find him a new home at the trading deadline.  The 34-year old James, who has played for nine different teams in nine NBA seasons, will be a valuable free-agent pickup for a team looking for someone that can provide veteran leadership and playoff experience.

Most Watched Game?Amityville's Mike James was part of what might have been the most watched television sports events of all time, as an estimated audience of as many as 200 million people tuned in to see his Houston Rockets take on the Milwaukee Bucks. The attraction? Well other than James, it just so happened that it was the first time Chinese stars Yao Ming and Yi Jianlian, the first round pick of the Bucks, had faced each other in a NBA game. Yao finished with 28 points, Yi 19, and James a solid 5 point, 5 assists, and 5 rebounds. Houston won 104-88 Man! If we'd only thought to give Mike a Long Island Basketbalkl.com T-shirt to wear before the game!

Dr. J Trivia
We all know Roosevelt's Julius Erving was named one of the 50 greatest basketball players of all time, but those of you that never got to see him play probably assume it was all because of his ability to score, often with spectacular dunks. That's certainly part of it, but when Dr. J retired in 1987, he was #1 on pro basketball's career steals list and #6 on the career blocked shots list. That' s a rare combination of skills, and only a small handful of players in NBA history appear in the top 6  on the career scoring, blocked shots and steals lists.

Mike James Day
Every year, Amityville's Mike James of the NBA's Washington Wizards throws a basketball party for his home town fans. It will be held again this coming Saturday  7/25 at Bolden Mack Park in Amityville, and the featured event is a game between Mike's Amityville All-Star Team and And-1. There is also good food, music, and games for the kids. Leading up to the event, there was also a charity golf tournament, and a free kids basketball clinic conducted by Mike and his formaer coach, Jack Agostino.

Dr. J Comes Home!
Thirty years ago, the Virginia Squires sold Julius Erving's contract to the Long Island based New York Nets. The powerful Squires, who also had George Gervin, another of the 50 Greatest Players Of All Time, were strapped for cash. The transaction marked the beginning of the end for the Virginia franchise, and the salvation of the Nets, who went on to win two ABA Championships in the next three years behind the Doctor. NBA DRAFT SPECIAL
Green To Cavs
Price To Pacers
North Babylon's Danny Green and Amityville's AJ Price both had their dreams come true when they were selected in the 2009 NBA Draft. Green was the 46th pick by the Cleveland Cavaliers, and Price the 52nd pick by the Indiana Pacers. Green seems like a perfect fit on a team  that just added Shaquille O'Neal to its  roster and will once again be a serious contender for the NBA Title. Price joins a struggling Pacers team that Pacer GM Larry Bird says he wants to rebuild with "winners" like Price and UNC's Tyler Hansbrough, their first round pick. As second round selections, neither Green nor Price will receive guaranteed contracts.
COMPLETE NBA DRAFT

A Day To Remember
For A.J Price and Danny Green, June 25th, 2009, will be a day to remember. When the NBA draft commences tonight at 7PM ET, these two Long Island-born players will be anxiously waiting to hear their names called in front of the hometown crowd at WaMu Theater. For both Green and Price the wait figures to be a long one- not a single reputable mock draft has either player taken in the first round.  In fact, if Price should spend too much time perusing NBAdraft.net, he may begin to wonder if his name will be called at all. Price's draft stock has recently taken a hit as the result of rumors regarding his health. The reports, which concerned an aneurysm in Price's brain thought to be the result of the near-fatal Arteriovenous Malformation he suffered in 2004, proved to be erroneous. However, teams are also concerned about Price's recent ACL reconstruction surgery. They wonder if he will have the lateral quickness to keep up with NBA guards on the defensive end.  Nonetheless, NBA teams are particularly cautious when it comes to red flags about a player's health, and especially so on draft day.  Green, fresh off a national championship run at North Carolina, is in a more comfortable position than Price is as draft day approaches. Despite the fact that he can pretty much rest assured that his name will be called, Green has almost no idea which team will call it.  He has worked out for Los Angeles, Cleveland, Charlotte, Chicago, Portland, Memphis and New Jersey, among others. Unless a trade is made, one city both Green and Price can count out as a potential draft day destination is New York.  Mock drafts see Green going anywhere from the 34th to the 55th pick, and Price is projected to go at best as the 41st pick, and at worst to go undrafted.  As a result of the 2007 draft-day deal for Zach Randolph the Knicks lack a second-round pick, which means that the North Babylon-born Green and the Amityville product Price won't be suiting up for their hometown team anytime soon. No matter which teams select Green and Price, 2009 looks to be the first draft since 2000 in which a Long Island-born player will get drafted. In 2000 Hempstead's own Speedy Claxton was taken with the 20th pick in the first round by Philadelphia.  If both Green and Price are selected 2009 will mark the first draft in the modern (two-round) era in which more than one Long Island-born player is drafted. Should Price go undrafted, it will mark yet another setback for a talented player whose career has been beset with numerous injuries and misfortunes. The draft, then, is sure to be a memorable one for Green, Price and Long Island basketball fans, for better or for worse.

Randy Smith Dead At 60
Randy Smith, one of the greatest basketball players ever to come out of Long Island, passed away at the age of 60 in Connecticut, apparently from a heart attack while working out. An extraordinary athlete, Smith starred at Bellport High School, then was an All-American in basketball, soccer, and track at Buffalo State. He went on to an outstanding 12 year NBA career, mostly with the Buffalo Braves. He played in 905 consecutive games, at the time an NBA record, and was considered the fastest player in the league at the peak of his career and an excellent defender. The two time NBA All-Star was MVP of the 1978 All-Star Game, scoring 27 points. He averaged 16.7 ppg over his career and 17.5 ppg in the playoffs. He finished as the Braves all-time leading scorer, surpassing Bob McAdoo. He played one season with the Knicks later in his career, averaging 10 points and 3 assists per game. After his playing career ended,  he joined the NBA front office as director of player programs, then coached in the Continental Basketball Association. He then joined Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Conn., where he worked as Director of Player Development until his death. The Randy Smith League,  an inner-city youth basketball program he sponsored, carried on in Buffalo after he left the city. He is enshrined in the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame and the Suffolk County Hall Of Fame. He is survived by his second wife, Angela, two sons, Brandon and Dominique, and a daughter, Terran.    READ MORE    CAREER STATS

Wizards 5-5 First Season
The New York Wizards, Long Island's new pro team, lost a tough one on the road to the 7-2 Nova Hawks, dropping a 101-98 decision in their season finale and  finishing 5-5. A depleted Wizards squad traveled to Maryland to play one of the top teams in the EBA, and almost stole the show before losing the game in the final 20 seconds. The Wizards had only 7 players and utilized a 3 guard starting lineup with league leading assist man and starting point guard Leon Pursoo, who played for LuHi, joined in the backcourt by Brandon Butler (CW Post) and Faith Academy's Greg Cerillo Jr.  Cerillo and Butler put on a shooting display the Maryland fans will not soon forget. As Nova attempted to double Sachem's Mike Mosby (17 points and 19 rebounds) and Malverne's Anthony Cox (27 points and 15 rebounds) Cerillo proceeded to drain 5-7 from the 3-pt line and 2-2 from the field, including 11 points in the first quarter, finishing the game with 19 points.  Butler virtually matched this display with 5-8 from the 3-pt line, finishing the game with 23 points. The 3 guard combination also racked up 8 steals (Cerillo-4, Butler-2, and Pursoo-2), but it was not enough as a last second goal tending call against the Wizards sealed their fate! Falling just short of the playoffs in a terrific first season, New York will now prepare to begin a barnstorming campaign to help promote the EBA in the Long Island New York area! They will also be holding tryouts for this years crop of college seniors. Watch for an announcement.
