Sound Workouts and Tryouts
The Strong Island Sound have announced that the team will be conducting Individual Workout Sessions as a part of their tryout procedure to complete the roster for the upcoming 2007-08 season. Candidates who excel in the sessions will be invited the Veteran’s Training Camp in September. The Sound will be announcing the signing of selected players from last season’s squad shortly. The I.W.S. will decide the remaining spots that will begin the season on Long Island. The private sessions will rate potential players on speed, endurance, strength, basketball intelligence, shooting, ball-handling and size under the supervision of a professional coach from the Sound staff in an indoor facility. Players/free agents who score in the 90 percentile range will be invited to Veteran’s Camp. The sessions duplicate the procedure used by all professional franchises, including the National Basketball Association, to identify potential draft picks and free agents. Players interested can fill out an online form via www.strongislandsound.com.
The Sound will be entering their third season in the ABA and have qualified for the postseason in each of their first two seasons in the league.

Iavaroni Retained By Memphis
Plainview's Marc Iavaroni will be coaching the Memphis Gizzlies again next season. LINKS:
Larry Brown Hired By Charlotte Former Long Beach star Larry Brown, who went on to star at North Carolina, the ABA, and later became an NCAA and NBA Championship coach, was hired to coach the NBA's Charlotte Bobcats. The well traveled Brown, fired from his dream job of coaching the Knicks after only one year, will now turns his sights on improving a franchise that has had only limited success in its brief history. Wally Has Nice Night
Cold Spring Harbor's Wally Szczerbiak has been struggling to find his famed shooting stroke with his new team the Cavaliers, but in game two of the NBA playoffs, he showed signs that he's finding the range, going 6-9 from the field and scoring 15 points to help Cleveland go up 2-0 on Washington in their first round match-up.
Iavaroni One and Done?Plainview's Marc Iavaroni is answering questions from the press about his future as coach after his Memphis Grizzlies finished with a worse record than the Knicks. Keep in mind though that Iavaroni had star Pau Gasol traded away from his team in mid-season for basically draft picks, so you can see why he feels he's going to return to help oversea the team's rebuilding process. He has two years remaining on his contract, and says he's had no indication from management that they are considering replacing him.
Szczerbiak Struggles With Cavs
When Cleveland acquired Ben Wallace, Delonte West and Cold Spring Harbor's Wally Szczerbiak for their playoff run, many thought it assured that they would once again be a serious contenders for the NBA title. It hasn't so far, with the Cavs going 9-10 since the deal as the playoffs approach. None of the three have lived up to expectations, with Szczerbiak, the shooter the Cavs craved to take some of the attention away from LeBron James, only hitting 36% of his shots, while big man Wallace has had back problems, and point guard West has also struggled. Will Wally and the others be able to turn it around in the playoffs?
Szczerbiak, James On Contenders
Both Cold Spring Harbor's Wally Szczerbiak and Amityville's Mike James find themselves on contending teams following the NBA trading deadline, and both are happy about and look forward to playing bigger roles. Szczerbiak joins Lebron James and the also newly acquired Ben Wallace on the Cleveland Cavaliers, while Mike James finds himself on the division leading New Orleans Hornets. James, who was averaging 6.5 points a game in Houston, said he will miss his wife and children, who live in Houston, "But it's about the game now. I'm still in the prime of my career. I've got a lot left in me. Szczerbiak was everything advertised in his 50-game stint with Seattle, averaging 13.1 points and shooting nearly 43 percent from the 3-point line, but didn't fit in with their youth movement.
Most Watched Game Of All Time?
Amityville's Mike James was part of what might have been one of the most watched television sports events of all time, as an estimated audience of as many as 200 million people tuned in to see his Houston Rockets take on the Milwaukee Bucks. The attraction? Well other than James, it just so happened that it was the first time Chinese stars Yao Ming and Yi Jianlian, the first round pick of the Bucks, had faced each other in a NBA game. Yao finished with 28 points, Yi 19, and James a solid 5 point, 5 assists, and 5 rebounds. Houston won 104-88 Man! If we'd only thought to give Mike a Long Island Basketbalkl.com T-shirt to wear before the game!
Pro Notes
Amityville's Mike James had 17 points, but Phoenix shut down Yao Ming and Tracey McGrady didn't play, so the Rockets fell to the Suns 115-105...... Plainview's Marc Iavaroni is off to a tough start as Coach of the Memphis Grizzlies. After a close 108-105 loss to the Mavericks on the road, they stand at 2-7.....Despite his showing fans, coaches, and teammates that he can still fill it up, Cold Spring Harbor's Wally Szczerbiak continues to get sporadic playing time for Seattle. A few games back, he finally got some decent playing time and took advantage of the opportunity, pouring in 32 points, but Seattle lost anyway. Looks like he needs to move on if he wants to prolong his career. ......Mike James had 13 points in Houston's big win over San Antonio...James had 15 points and 7 assists in Houston's road win at Utah......Hempstead's Speedy Claxton played in only two preseason games and is out indefinitely with a sore right knee....
Wally Shows Em What He Can Do
Wally Szczerbiak has been used sparingly in preseason so far as new Seattle Coach PJ Carlisimo searches for a rotation. Some have questioned how much Szczerbiak has left after a series of injuries, but he showed Seattle fans, coaches, and teammates what he can still do by scoring 24 points and pulling down 8 rebounds in the Sonics OT preseason loss to Golden State.
Strong Games For James
Mike James had 17 points against Dallas and 19 points against Memphis as he continues to make a case for playing time in Houston.
Sore Knee Plaguing Claxton
After a promising start, Speedy Claxton has sat out all but two of Atlanta's preseason games with a sore knee. Claxton again has the opportunity to win the starting job with the Hawks, but the nagging pain in is knee is dimming his chances.
LI Pros In Europe
*Former Bucknell and St. John The Baptist star Donald Brown is now playing professionally in Iceland
*Former University at Albany basketball standout Jamar Wilson, who played his high school ball at OSNA, will play professionally in Europe with Verviers-Pepinster, a first division team in Belgium.
Claxton Racking Up Assists
In a battle with Tyron Lue and Acie Law for the starting point guard spot with Atlanta, Speedy Claxton is averaging 20 minutes and 4.5 assists in two preseason games.
James 14 In Win Over Euro Champ
Mike James had 14 points as his Houston Rockets defeated European League Champion Panathinaikos of Greece 107-70 in a preseason game. Yao MIng led the Rockets with 21.
Szczerbiak 14 in Sonic Debut
Wally Szczerbiak had 14 points in his first preseason game with Seattle. He sat out the preseason opener with slight swelling in his knee.
Speedy Sits As Precaution
Speedy Claxton was scratched from the Hawks preseason opener for precautionary reasons as he continues to try to get his knees healthy. Claxton is reportedly in fairly good shape injury-wise, but is being pushed hard by rookie Acie Law thus far. It's up in the air as to who the opening-night starter will be.
Szczerbiak Has "A Lot Left"
Hamilton Ends Up In Russia
Zendon Hamilton has signed with a Russian team by the name of Krasnoyarsk Yenisei.
Sonics Blog: Wally Healthy
Wally Szczerbiak said he is 100 percent healthy seven months removed from ankle surgery. Unlike Ray Allen, who had bone spurs removed from each of his ankles, Szczerbiak had his left ankle reconstructed to prevent constant sprains. He said his ligaments had been stretched from several sprains over the past few years. Szczerbiak will wear No. 3.
Roto World: Claxton Impressive
Speedy Claxton appears to be over his knee problems from last year and has impressed his teammates over the summer. "Speedy has been great," teammate Joe Johnson said. "I think out of all of us, Speedy has been the most impressive, honestly. It's been like two totally different Speedy Claxtons, one from last year and now to this summer when we came back and started playing. He's great, in shape and injury free." Claxton might be the favorite to win the starting point guard job in Atlanta, but we'll have to see how things shake out in camp.
Zendon Hamilton With Portland ?
Sewanhaka's Zendon Hamilton contributed 16 points (5-7 FG, 6-14 FT) in 28 minutes of play filling in for the absent Greg Oden on Portland's Summer League team. Hamilton was a late cut last year for the Trailblazers, and with Zach Randolf moving on and a talented rookie coming in, there may be a mentoring role available for Hamilton this year.
Szczerbiak To Sonics
The Seattle SuperSonics traded All-Star Ray Allen and the 35th pick in this year’s draft to the Boston Celtics for Cold Spring Harbor's Wally Szczerbiak, Delonte West and the No. 5 pick in the draft.
Claxton's Future Uncertain
After signing with Atlanta last season, it looked like
Hempstead's Speedy Claxton finally would be given the opportunity to run his own team after excelling as a back-up most of his career. But Claxton had injury problems almost from day one, and now the Hawks have drafted a point guard in the first round to go with Tyrone Lue, who filled in last year. One things for sure: If he stays healthy, Speedy will give then both a run for their money!
Rockets Reacquire James
The Rockets re-acquired Amityville's Mike James from from the T-Wolves along with Justin Reed in exchange for Juwan Howard.

Knicks Win Tiebreaker
The Knicks, who finished tied with the Los Angeles Clippers at 23-59 for the fifth-worst record in the NBA, won a tiebreaker and will be guaranteed no worse than the 5th pick, and will have a slightly better chance than LA of moving into one of the top slots. The lottery will be held May 20 to determine the top three picks. The other 11 teams in the lottery will then pick in inverse order of their records.
Mark Jackson Next Knicks Coach?
Former Knicks and St.John's star point guard Mark Jackson is apparently on the list of candidates for the the Head Coaching position with his old team. LINKS:
Isiah Thomas Fired
The inevitable finally happened, as the Knicks fired Head Coach Isiah Thomas after another horrible season that saw the team finish 43 games out of first place.
Are the Nets still moving to Brooklyn? LINKS:
Indiana 132, New York 123 In Finale
Jamal Crawford led New York with 25 points, Zach Randolph had 23 points and 15 rebounds, and Fred Jones had 20 points as the Knicks finished their season with a 23-59 record, good for last place in the Atlantic Division, 43 games behind Boston.
Marbury Out
Knicks point guard Stephon Marbury had surgery Tuesday to remove bone spurs from his left ankle and is out indefinitely. Marbury said last week he would try to return this season.
Knicks Beat Heat
The Knicks beat Miami 88-84 - sending the Heat to their 13th straight loss, the longest in the league and the worst stretch of coach Pat Riley's career.
No McGrady Rockets Beat Knicks
Yao Ming scored 30 points to lead the Houston Rockets over the Knicks 103-91. It was New York's 7th loss in a row.
Knicks Rally For Win
Their humiliating 45 point loss to the Celtics may have obscurred it, but the Knicks come from behind victory over the Bucks was their 3rd win in their last four games.Jamal Crawford led the comeback and finished with 25 points, and Zach Randolf finished with 25 points and 8 rebounds. The home crowd had been chanting "Fire Isaih" before the rally.
Knicks Beat Bulls to Snap Streak
The Knicks snapped their eight-game losing streak with an 85-78 victory over the surprisingly feeble Chicago Bulls, who fell to 2-9 on the season. Eddy Curry led the way with 21 points, Zach Randolph finished with 20, and Stephon Marbury shook off the boos from the home fans to add 19, including two big baskets after Chicago had rallied to tie the game.
Is The End Near For Isiah?
The direction of the New York Knicks season has changed dramatically in the past few weeks. When the Knicks played the Denver Nuggets back on November 6th, they played like a team on the rise, led by a suddenly dominant Eddy Curry and a supporting cast who seemed to be ready for prime time. Madison Square Garden was rocking like it hadn't in years, and the Knicks appeared headed for the playoffs. Just 11 days later, the Knicks fell to that same Nuggets team 113-85, the latest in a string of six consecutive losses. With controversy and putridity simultaneously reaching an historic apex, the question must be asked: Should Isiah Thomas's time with the New York Knicks come to an end?
Isiah Thomas was brought in to be the savior of the franchise. In December of 2003 the team was floundering in mediocrity and irrelevance, and since the trade of Patrick Ewing and the resignation of coach Jeff Van Gundy in 2001, the team had lacked a direction and an identity. In order to provide both, Isiah Thomas was hired as the president of basketball operations on December 22nd, 2003. Less than two weeks later, Thomas made his first public splash by trading for Brooklyn-born All Star point guard Stephon Marbury. The fates of the two men have since been inextricably linked. Though they finished below .500 for the season, the Knicks managed to sneak into the playoffs before being swept by the Nets in the first round, and it's all been downhill since then.
Thomas's sins as an executive, a coach, and a human being have been well-documented and publicized. His exorbitant trades and free-agent signings, which have ballooned the Knick's payroll to the highest in the league; his inability as a coach to win with the expensive players he has acquired; his embarrassing sexual harassment trial, and his recent altercation with Marbury, not to mention the name Larry Brown (never a good idea among Knicks fans); one wonders how Thomas has managed to survive this long. While Thomas has long lost the support of the fans and the press, his two closest allies were his players and his boss, James Dolan. The recent situation with Marbury has raised the question of whether Thomas lost the support of the locker room after he, allegedly, ignored the team's vote that he not play Marbury after the player deserted his team. There are reports that Dolan, who hasn't spoken publicly about Thomas since he rewarded him with a multi-year extension in March, is already considering firing his team president and coach. As the Knicks drift further into the cellar of the NBA, and December 22nd approaches, it becomes increasingly likely that Thomas will not be around to celebrate the fourth anniversary of his hiring. Knicks Lose 4th Straight
The Knicks used a 20-4 4th quarter run to tie the game, but couldn't finish and fell to the Clippers for their 4th loss in a row. Stephon Marbury returned to the team and got major minutes off the bench, and Zach Randolf was back too and picked up another double-double.
Knicks Lose 2nd Straight At Home
The Knicks lost their second straight home game, this time to the winless Heat who were still without Dwyane Wade. Zach Randolph missed the game due to the death of his grandmother, and Nate Robinson only played a few minutes because of a lingering hamstring injury. Poor shooting was the culprit this time, although the Heat would say it was tough defense. Stephon Marbury had a huge turnover with 40 seconds remaining and the Knicks up by one.
Knicks Fall Flat
The Knicks lost at home to a solid Orlando team. It was close throughout, but as time wound down, their defense betrayed them again, and the shots didn't fall at clutch time. Final 112-102. They are 2-2 overall now.
Kinicks Beat Nuggets
Good news and bad news - but mostly good. The Knicks beat Denver to go 2 - 0 at home. If you remember, they had a horrendous start at home last season. Even better, the Nuggets have a good solid team and two players - Carmelo Anthony and Alan Iverson - better than anyone on the Knicks roster, so it was a nice win. More good news? Eddie Curry was awesome, looking like a young Shaq at times. I'm not sure I've seen him play better. The bad news? The defense was still soft, yielding 112 points, and Jamal Crawford, as talented as he is, is a classic ball hog. We'll see.
Knicks Lose Opener, Win at Home
The Knicks lost their season opener 110-106 on the road at Cleveland, but bounced back to win their home opener 97-93 against Minnesota. Lebron James shredded the Knick defense for 45 points, but the Knicks managed to keep it close with strong offensive games from Jamal Crawford, Zach Randolph Nate Robinson and Eddie Curry . The defense was suspect again in the home opener, but the scoring of Jamal Crawford was enough to hold off a weak Timberwolves team. I know its early, but some disturbing trends have already started to develop on the Knicks- poor defense and 1 on 1 play on offense - and it will be another long season unless they are corrected.
Knicks Season Previews
Knicks Win Again, Waive Nichols
The Knicks registered their second straight impressive preseason win, beating Philly with a good balanced attack. Nate Robinson continued his strong preseason, scoring 20 second half points, Zach Randolph notched a double-double, and Fred Jones came off the bench to score 16. They also announced that Demetris Nichols, Jared Jordan, and Walker Russell, Jr. have been waived.
Houston Ends Knicks Comeback
Allan Houston's attempted comeback with the Knicks came to an end Saturday when the guard announced he will not play this season. "After much consideration, I have decided to end my comeback with the Knicks," Houston said in a statement released by the Knicks. "While my body and my knees, in particular, feel fine, I know what is required for me to be truly effective in the NBA again, and it involves a timing and progression that would not be fair to Isiah [Thomas] and the Knicks right now. With the season opening less than two weeks away, I think it is best for the team to move on without me. I appreciate the opportunity that Isiah and the Knicks have given me, and I wish the team nothing but success."

Knicks Down Maccabi Tel Aviv
In a prerseason game atended by 18,000 fans, the Knicks defeated top Euro League Team Maccabi Tel Aviv 112-85 at the Garden. Tel Aviv, paced by Vonteego Cummings' 21 points, led 25-20 at the end of the first quarter, but Knicks guard Nate Robinson hit a three-pointer from the left corner to give the Knicks a 27-25 lead with 9:51 to go in the second quarter, and New York never looked back. Zach Randoph led the Knicks with 16 points.
Knicks Sign Allan Houston
At age 36, Allan Houston is rejoining the New York Knicks, two years after knee pain forced him to walk away. The Knicks re-signed their former star guard Wednesday and expect him to begin his attempt to make the team at practice Friday. Once one of the NBA's best outside shooters, Houston retired two years ago this month after chronic knee pain limited him to 70 games over the previous two seasons.
Knicks Win Preseason Opener
The Zach Randolph era got under way for the Knicks in Columbia, S.C., as the power forward acquired from Portland in the offseason led the team to a 101-92 win over the Philadelphia 76ers in the preseason opener.
Randolph got off to a quick startand ended the night with 17 points and five rebounds in just 25 minutes of action, with 13 of his points coming in the first half.
