        Bringin' It From The Bench
I think you have to be a special person and player to bring your best game from the bench.  Bringin' it from the bench requires that you have a clear focus, stay mentally prepared at all times, and have prepared enough both in terms of your skill work, and understanding your teams needs that you can contribute when the coach calls your name.  GO TO FULL STORY

         Attitude, the "Right Stuff"
An important aspect is developing a proper attitude about the game. To become winners, we must recognize how important our teammates are. "United we stand, divided we fall!" We must stick together. We must work together on offense with good passing, looking for an open teammate. But don't be afraid to shoot! If you are open, take the shot. Part of being a good teammate is scoring and taking good shots! If you miss a shot, forget it...you'll probably make the next one.   GO TO STORY

                The Role Player
We can't all be super-stars, or even starters. We don't all have great shooting skills or ball-handling skills. But we can still be important "spokes in the wheel". We can still be very important to the success of our team. We are important "role players". GO TO FULL STORY

Kendall Harris Thriving In Pa.
Brentwood is one of Long Island's best teams this season, despite the fact that one of their top players moved to Pennsylvania over the summer. He now plays for Pocono Mountain East, and according to the local newspaper, is "... a big reason why East is 10-2".
They had a few more things to say about Harris, who represented Long Island at last summer's Empire Games: "A bruising 6-foot-6 forward, Harris transferred to Pocono East last summer from Brentwood High School in Long Island. While the move with his parents was tough at first, having some family in the area has helped the senior. "It's different," said Harris, who had 18 points, including three dunks, and nine rebounds against rival Pocono West. "I miss my friends, but my cousins are here so the transition has been a bit easier."  We all wish him continued success!

Tobias Out 6-8 Weeks
Tobias Harris suffered torn ligaments in his ankle and will be sidelined  6-8 weeks. He will be in a cast for 2-3 weeks as the ligaments heal. This is the same ankle that was sprained early in the summer and prevented Tobias' participation in the Reebok All American Camp
All-Star game. It most likely never properly healed due to Tobias' hectic summer schedule.

TJ Carey Gets Short End Of Stick
Second year Harvard Coach Tommy Amaker continued to generate controversy, cutting five of the players he inherited from his predecessor after they had already registered for classes. Amaker notified the five before classes began in early September that they no longer had spots on the team, too late for them to transfer to other schools. The cut players were never even given the opportunity to compete for their spots, even though some of them had started games last season. One of the players was former St. Dom's star TJ Carey, who appeared in 27 games and made seven starts as a freshman, averaging nearly 12 minutes per game. Speaking to the New York Times, Carey's father said “If you want to cut my son, fine. You could have done it last year. Give them the opportunity to move on." The move was apparently made to make room for Amaker's highly regarded freshman recruiting class.

St. Mary's Guard Impresses at IS8
NYHoops.com covers New York City basketball, and in their coverage of IS8, mentioned a Long Island player that has played well in the prestigious league and that many of you might not be familiar with. Here is what they had to say:  "Justin Bailey  6’1” PG/SG, St. Mary’s (LI) and Playaz Club Sr’s. Yes he’s a sophomore who joined the Playaz senior team probably to play while their established stars like Dominic Cheek went on recruiting visits.  To his credit he fit in seamlessly with a brand new team thanks to his steady and smart play.  He moves well without the ball and shoots it quickly and accurately because he sets his feet well coming off screens and squares up on every shot.  He has also demonstrated an ability to make good decisions passing the ball in transition but we’ll need to see him more to determine if he projects as a point guard. He has good instincts and poise and those things combined with a reliable jump shot will likely make him a player D-I’s should have their eye on."   - John Miciotta/NYHoops

Player Notes
Boston College Coach Al Skinner is the third Long Islander to offer Rod Odom a scholarship, joining Ralph Willard up at Holy Cross and Joe Jones at Columbia. ......LuHi sophomore Tyler Harris received an offer from Duquesne. Bilbo averaged 15 points, 9 rebounds and 3 blocks for the Bayhawks last year and has improved greatly over the summer months.

Devietri Hurt At IS8
Chaminade star Dan DiVietri, playing for the Long Island Lightning, strained his knee at an IS8 game against the Rhode Island Breakers last weekend, but the MRI confirms that there is no tear and he should be OK to tryout for the Metro Classic and back in time for the start of the high school season. His Lightning team went on to win the game behind 31 points from John Glenn's Phil Izevbehai.

Player Notes
Bay Shore's Chris Obi is receiving interest from several mid-major Division I programs after choosing to take the junior college route. He is attending Lewis & Clark, where he was named Second Team All Conference and listed as one of the top point guards in Region 24, which is considered one of the toughest in the nation. "We are expecting Chris to have a huge year. His recruitment has really picked up and will continue to do so once the season begins".said L&C Assistant Coach Milton Stith............We might have missed a player for the Preseason Long Island All-Collegiate Team. St. Mary's grad Tyson Johnson finished last season on a roll for the University of Wyoming, and they are looking for big things from him this year. Johnson scored in double figures in 10 of the last 12 games, averaging 12.5 points and 5.9 rebounds while shooting 51 percent from the field and 78 percent from the line.......LuHi's Tyler Harris, a 6ft 4 sophomore, has been offered by Fordham University......Neal Fishenden, who was a top player on the SJB JV last season, is now at Sayville...... His relentless defense is what raises his game over most, and he is now getting interests from mid majors. Williams was also highly impressive, and interest rolled in quickly for the 6'3" scorer. Justin creates problems for defenders with his strong frame and quick first step. Scoring at will, and in many different ways allows him to play multiple positions

Harris Visits St. John's
Tobias Harris took an unofficial visit to St.John's University and came away very impressed with what coach Norm Roberts is doing there. Even in a 83-69 loss in the final, he "carved up the All-Ohio defense". Rod Odom, who by the way is from the small town of Ridge, which is in the Longwood School District, led his team to the Elite 8 of the 17U Division, scoring 15 points, pulling down 10 rebounds, and shutting down a 6'9 center in a win over Boo Williams

Tobias Harris Update
The news about Harris keeps pouring in! Tobias  followed his strong performance at Reebok Camp with another one at the high profile Peach Jam Tournament. As a result, Wake Forest, Florida State, Texas, Louisville, Miami, and Syracuse have all now made scholarship offers to him, adding to his already impressive list. The continued surge of positive press has followed his frequent play in the post as he pushes past 6'8 and fills out. In the post, he brings that  combination of perimeter skills and post skills that we're all familiar with here on Long Island, and the country's top prospects are having trouble matching up with him. Here are some more highlights: At Reebok Camp, he outplayed top prospect Renardo Sidney, "taking him off the dribble time and time again"..... In a feature article by one of those websites you have to subscribe to, they say he is becoming one of the top prospects in the country! Here are links to the articles:

       Another Elite Long Islander!
Tobias Harris isn't the only Long Island underclassman big time colleges are lining up for. 6'8 Rod Odom, who has been a bit under the radar locally because he plays at a prep school in Massachusetts, has been attracting lots of attention with his strong play at top notch national events too, and many top D1 programs are showing interest. We'll keep you up on his progress, and hopefully, we can get him to participate in a few events back home so his fans can see him play!

  Another Elite Long Island Player
We're hearing about another terrific Long Island player you probably have never heard of. Melsahn Basabe is a 6"7 forward from Glen Cove that attends St. Marks School in Southborough, Mass, and was a sophomore last season. He is one of the top ranked players in his class in the State of Massachusetts, is described as having great potential by recruiters, and is drawing attention from division 1 colleges.

    Sammy Prahalis on USA Team
It's killing us, but we just don't have the manpower to start covering the girls side yet. Our biggest regret has been missing out on documenting the incredible high school career of Commack star Sammy Prahalis. Sammy is without a doubt one of the greatest high school basketball players ever to come out of Long Island. We're going to make an exception this time though, because we want you to know that she was one of only 35 girls nationwide to be invited to try out for the U18 US National Team. And as if that wasn't enough, she went on to make the 12 woman squad that will represent the USA at the FIBA Americas Tournament. Congratulations Sammy, and good luck at Ohio State next fall!

  Rashad Green To San Francisco?
It is being reported that Rashad Green, who had a good first season at Manhattan, has decided to transfer to the University of San Francisco.                What Does It Take?
St. Dom's star Brian Katz, who will be playing his basketball at Yale next season, is known for his deadly jumper, his ability to move without the ball, and a knack for hitting clutch shots under pressure. What does he do during the offseason to stay at the top of his game , while still keeping his Ivy League caliber grades up? Here is his workout schedule:
Monday- Individual basketball skills training.
Tuesday- Strength training (primarily upper body)
Wednesday- Ball-handling, shooting and strength
Thursday- Strength training (primarily legs/power)
Friday- Ball-handling, shooting and strength
Saturday- Speed, agility, quickness, explosion, vertical and conditioning.
His workouts last at least an hour,  and he also plays whenever he can - on summer leagues teams, in pick-up games etc.

     Harris Putting Spotlight On LI
Tobias Harris, the 6'7 and growing phenom who averaged 30 points a game as a sophomore and led his Hills West Colts to a Suffolk Class AA title, is helping lead the resurgence of Long Island basketball and will focus national and regional attention on all our players and teams in his final two high school seasons. Harris has been to all the high profile camps and participated in all the high profile tournaments and showcases, and the list of college teams recruiting him is nothing short of incredible.  As of now, Harris has scholarship offers from from Louisville, Connecticut, Indiana, Maryland, Marquette, Baylor, St. John’s, West Virginia, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Miami, Delaware, Hofstra and North Carolina State, and Kansas, North Carolina, Wake Forest, Auburn, Seton Hall, Texas, Arizona State, Memphis, Oklahoma, Providence, DePaul and Syracuse are now showing interest too. Couple all that attention with Long Island's convincing win over New York City in the head to head season series last year, and the fact that four Long Island teams played for State Championships last season despite it being a supposed "down year" for Long Island basketball, and you can see where things are headed. Catch an interview with Harris tonight at on News 12 at about 8:20pm.

                Some Good News!
Last fall, James Wilson had just come off a very strong summer and fall and was set to be the starting point guard on a powerful St. Dominic team with State Championship aspirations. James was attracting interest from a nice assortment of colleges and looking forward to a memorable senior year - when out of nowhere an athlete's nightmare came true for him. He tore his ACL in practice and was out for what seemed destined to be his dream season. But there is a happy ending; his dream seasons are still ahead of him!  After successful surgery, he diligently rehabbed the knee and enrolled for a year of Prep School at St. Thomas Moore. Tryouts: Anxiety Time For Players
It begins in Middle School. Middle School tryouts often have 75 to 100 candidates for 14-15 spots in both 7th and 8th grades. The child, who has always been a starter on his local travel team - often coached by his dad or best friend’s dad -  will now be evaluated by the middle school coach for that grade - a coach that might not have ever seen him play before. The coaches, for the most part, are faculty members of the school assigned to the department of Physical Education. They are not particularly interested in the boy’s record on his travel team and certainly not the opinion of a parent. Having been anointed the star of the CYO team or number one pick in your local league draft every season offers no guarantee of selection. Practicing in their backyards and driveways, the kids are all quite confident at first that they will make the team and possibly be in the starting lineup. Then reality hits. With up to a hundred boys in small middle school gyms, getting noticed may be difficult if not impossible. Bigger kids always have an advantage since they tend to develop later and coaches don’t want to cut a kid with a big upside despite the lack of currents skills. Then if the shots that always seem to swish through in the driveway basket don’t fall in the tryouts.......Like we said, it's an anxious time. Good luck and keep the faith! Don't forget, Michael Jordan didn't make one of his school teams!  TAKEN FROM THE EIBER REPORT

"If You Didn’t Make the Team"
If you didn't make your team here are 10 things you should do:
1)    Ask the head coach why you did not make the team and what you will have to do in order to make it next year.
2)     Ask to be a practice player.or team manager.
3)     Start training and working on your weaknesses
4)     Get a chip on your shoulder and play with it every time you are on the court.
5)     Stay positive even though you may be disappointed.
6)     Get physically stronger and more explosive.
7)     Improve your shooting, defense & ball handling skills because chances are one of these were the reason why you got cut.
8)     Get an honest skills assessment from a reliable skills trainer so you know where you are at and what it will take to get you where you want to be.
9)     Start watching more basketball (College Basketball) and absorbing & studying the game at that level to see what areas you need to improve at.  Be a student of the game.
10)  Write down how it felt to be cut and then how it would feel to make that team one year later…then write down what you will do every day and each week to improve your game.
Good luck and remember many incredible basketball players were cut from a team at one point in time.  Keep at it and call us if you need help! For more info on any of the above tips, please check out GetFST.COM or call 516-384-0216 & I would be happy to discuss.

       Getting Ready For Tryouts
Here are some tips taken from an excellent article written by Shimmy Grey, Head Coach at St. Louis University. They have been edited to fit our format.
#1 - MAKE YOURSELF STAND OUT. Bring something to the table that no other player has. Start with good old-fashioned hustle. That will get any coach’s attention. Crash the offensive boards, dive on the floor for loose balls, play defense like your life depends on it, and talk, talk, talk! Cheer on your teammates and call out movements on defense and treat every drill like it’s a game. I guarantee your coach will notice you. There always is room on a team for blue-collar players with great work ethic. After each day of tryouts, go up to the coach and ask how you can improve on your game. Get to tryouts early and shoot a little extra afterwards.
#2 - TAKE CARE OF YOUR BODY! You are stressed and nervous and your body is going to react to that. Eat the right foods, get adequate rest, and drink a lot of water.
#3 - RELAX! The hard part already is done. All the work that you put into your game this summer at camps, clinics, 3 on 3 tournaments and, of course, by yourself in the gym or driveway sweating it out, is what is going to get you through these tryouts.
If you make sure to do all these things, then the final bit of advice I have should come pretty easily. That of course is simply to HAVE FUN! Good luck and see you on the court!

There is a great educational resource for basketball players and all athletes with asthma, and its also very useful to the athlete's parents and coaches. Its called Breathe Easy.               The Trainer's Table
At one time or another you may have “rolled “or “twisted” your ankle during a game or practice. It may have hurt for a while and you were unable to put pressure on it, but within a few minutes you were able to walk on it and resume the game or practice. If this happens only once, you may not be thinking anything of it, but if it happens again in the next game or practice, there may be a serious problem waiting to happen.

Physical Training in Off-Season
Basketball is perhaps the most demanding of all sports. It's a game of quickness: fast starts, sharp cuts and turns, acceleration and deceleration, and jumping. The heart of the game is running. It's estimated that a starting high school player will run a total of 3 to 5 miles in a 32-minute game..

When You Don't Have The Ball
Think about it! Most of the time you will not have possession of the ball. Half of the time you will be on defense. Of the remaining half when your team has the ball, 80% of that time you personally will not have the ball, as one of your teammates will have it. So what do you do when you don't have the ball?

         Become a Better Player
To be consistently good at anything in life, you have to focus yourself on getting better at it every day. That holds for basketball too. If you've made up your mind to be the best basketball player you can be, make sure to practice every day. Then, spend some time developing your basketball brain too. Thats just as important, if not more so. Here are some ways you can do that:
* Analyze every game that you watch. Identify the defenses and plays being run. Remember what plays worked best and what moves worked best and think about why they worked so well. Think of what might work better when things don't work so well.
* When you're playing, study your opponents and figure out their tendencies - their strengths and weaknesses. Especially if you are watching from the bench! When  you figure out what they do well, then concentrate on  how to take it away from them.
* Study players better than you are and figure out how they do what they do, and do it too.
* When you're learning your teams plays, study and understand all the options, not just your own. It always pays to be versatile, and when you know and understand what's going on around you and what to expect, you play with more confidence.
* Learn to play in the post and on the perimeter too, no matter what position you play. If you can do things that others who play your position can't, like posting up a guard or drawing a big man out to the perimeter, you're sure to get more playing time.
*  Read coaching articles and books and watch coaching videos.Understand how different offenses and defenses work, not just your own.  LIB.com

Footwork Fundamentals
Basketball is played on the fingertips and the balls of your feet. Everything you do involves correct footwork. Some players are naturally quicker than others. But a player's effective quickness can be greatly enhanced if he/she uses proper footwork. A naturally quick player who lacks good footwork skills can be beaten (or contained) by a player with sound footwork fundamentals.  GO TO FULL STORY

The Lost Art of Passing
Remember the line, "Where have you gone Joe DiMaggio?" For this topic, it's "Where have you gone Magic Johnson?" Magic was a great, unselfish TEAM player who may have been the greatest passer of all time (although John Stockton is pretty good too). Television focuses on watching the pros doing their one-on-one moves and slam dunks. Kids see this too. Team skills and delivering the perfectly timed and accurate pass aren't as flashy. Besides, who wants to do passing drills... everyone finds them boring, both players and coaches. I am at fault too... this passing article is the last one I have written in the "Player Development" section of this web-site. FULL STORY
