After squandering an 11 point lead, the team from Long Island got back into it on a Resner three pointer at the 9 second mark. Lightning Summer Playoffs
In the 6/7 Grade Boys Division, the finals had two Lightning teams facing off. The teams headed by Chris Craig and Maurice Barbera had faced off during the regular season and had split. We expected that this game was going to be closely contested and well coached and it was just that! The lead changed hands several times in the first half and the score at halftime was 21-20 in favor of Lightning-Barbera. The Craig team scored on a three pointer on the first play of the second half and never lost the lead again. The game remained very close for most of the final half until the Lightning - Craig team pulled away in the final minute. The score was 55-42 but that in now way indicated what really took place during this well played, close game. The leading scorers were John Tomasini with 23 points for the Lightning -Craig squad while Bobby Atkinson led Lightning- Barbera with 12 points. Congratulations to Chris Craig and his fine squad on a great summer season. Coach Criag has now won back to back championships in the Lightning Summer League but with different teams. Last year his 17U Lightning team were crowned the Champions in both the Summer and Fall Leagues. In the 8th Grade Boys Division, the game was equally exciting. Long Island Lightning - Zoller burst out to an 11-1 lead but Seaford Lightning answered back with a 20-0 run. Seaford maintained its lead and was ahead at the half 32-22. The Lightning Zoller team went on an 8-0 run early in the second half to pull within 4 of Seaford but that would be as close as they would get. Seaford had outstanding inside-outside play that was too much for the Lightning. Seaford won the game 59-54. High scorers were Mike Siller for Seaford with 20 points and Rich Zoller had 17 for the Lightning. One final note - this was a terrific accomplishment for Coach Al Siller of Seaford considering that last year his squad finished in last place. Congratulations to Coach Siller and his Seaford Lightning team.

Nassau PAL To The Rescue!
The Nassau County PAL has been serving the youth of Long Island since 1940 and has been an important part of so many kids lives since then. PAL basketball in particular has been the starting point for many of Long Island's top players and a source of fond memories for all of us that have participated. In that same spirit, the Nassau County PAL is coming through for us again. This year, they graciously contributed the uniforms for the Nassau County Team that participated in the Coaches For A Cause All Star Game against Suffolk County. With austerity the rule of the day, it couldn't have been more timely or more appreciated. On behalf of the Nassau County Coaches Association, the players of Nassau County and all their families and fans, we'd like to say thanks for the uniforms and thanks for everything you've done for our children for all these years.

Details About St. Matthews
On July 15, 2006 St. Matthews pastor, Rev. John J. McCartney, made the difficult decision to cancel the existing athletic program after the District Attorney’s Office began a criminal investigation of the administration of the athletic program’s funds. That weekend, as he announced the closing of the old program, he also announced the opening of a new program under the direct supervision of the parish. This announcement was met with applause at every mass. Fr. McCartney appointed an athletic board comprised of seven members of the parish to help form a new athletic program for the children. Since that time, St. Matthew’s has gone forward and has begun to implement a new basketball program for the 2006/2007 season. They have registered girls and boys teams in the Nassau - Suffolk CYO travel leagues, and they are also offering an intramural program for boys and girls in grades 2 through 8. So far, there are more than 250 children, and more than 30 coaches. The  program is indeed alive and well. The parish is grateful to the many people who are volunteering their time to make this program be a great experience for our children.
