Details About St. Matthews
On July 15, 2006 St. Matthews pastor, Rev. John J. McCartney, made the difficult decision to cancel the existing athletic program after the District Attorney’s Office began a criminal investigation of the administration of the athletic program’s funds. That weekend, as he announced the closing of the old program, he also announced the opening of a new program under the direct supervision of the parish. This announcement was met with applause at every mass. Fr. McCartney appointed an athletic board comprised of seven members of the parish to help form a new athletic program for the children. Since that time, St. Matthew’s has gone forward and has begun to implement a new basketball program for the 2006/2007 season. They have registered girls and boys teams in the Nassau - Suffolk CYO travel leagues, and they are also offering an intramural program for boys and girls in grades 2 through 8. So far, there are more than 250 children, and more than 30 coaches. The program is indeed alive and well. The parish is grateful to the many people who are volunteering their time to make this program be a great experience for our children.
