Island Garden Fall League
For the past 10 years Island Garden has hosted an outstanding High School PreSeason League which gave teams an opportunity to prepare for the upcoming year. We always begin in mid-September and finish prior to the beginning of the high school practice season. We have consistently sold out while receiving excellent feedback about the favorable impact which this preparation period had on the team's regular season. This year we are offering two options and expanding the age groups from 5th grade through high school. The first option will be the standard 8 game season plus playoffs (if the team qualifies). The cost for the 8 game season will be $595 plus $35.00 per game for the referee. The 4 game season will be $325.00 plus $35.00 per game for the referee. MORE

Harris Elite 24 Co-MVP
The game started late because of the rain and the need to move to a new location, but that didn't slow down Hills West's Tobias Harris, who scored 20 points and pulled down 5 rebounds to earn co-mvp honors at the Boost Mobile Elite 24 Game along with fellow New Yorker Doron Lamb. Harris solidified his stature as one of the top players in the country, playing a strong all around game against 23 of the nation's best high school players.

Williams Leads Metro Hawks
Long island's Keith Williams led the Metro Hawks 14U Team to an undefeated Championship in the Hoop in the Sun Summer League. Lightning Eiber Tryouts
Long Island Lightning Eiber is holding basketball tryouts and individual evaluations for boys born on or after September 1, 1997 or entering 6th grade in September, 2009.  Lightning Eiber is an advanced travel team playing all year in multiple leagues.  We are the defending Super League Champions in 5th Grade D-1 and 6th Grade D-2.  All current members are eleven years old.  Since November 1, 2008 the team has played 62 games.  We anticipate playing in the 2009-2010 Island Garden Basketball Super League in both Sixth and Seventh Grade Division One and the IS 8 tournament.  We are looking for boys who play either the forward or center position.  The boys who play those positions are typically five foot eight inches or above in height.  We do not have roster space open for boys who are point guards or shooting guards.  We have many returning players at those positions that have played on the team since third grade. There will be at least two games and one practice per week with multiple weekly practice sessions in September and October.  Participation on this team requires a significant commitment by both boys and parents.  For those families interested, please contact Coach Eiber at (917) 225-7576 or (516) 466-7600 or email searington@aol.com.

-11U (rising 5th graders or young 6th graders born on or after 9/1/98) squad.

The 11U team is a new team with a solid core group which has been training and practicing together for the past 4 months and looking to begin play.  We have 3, possibly 4 open spots on his team. Players need to be physical, dedicated and have the ability and head to perform at the AAU level. This weekend the Defenders won the The Chase the Game tournament in Yonkers, NY.  They won their pool without their 2 big men, getting great play from Rexton Gorden, Chris Green & Taylor Sowah on the boards. Then they played the play-offs & championship game with only guards. They were out sized in a tight game but edged out the taller, stronger Crusaders.  They went on to play a more evenly matched City Sports team for the championship.  City Sports led most of the way but a last minute push by the Defenders with great defense from Tajric Boggs, Gerald Holmes, Nigel Edwards and a buzzer beater 3 pointer by Darien Davis sealed the deal. The Defenders went 5-0 in the tourney

LI Avengers 3-0 At Hooperstown
The LI Avengers played at Hooperstown in MT Vernon NY and went 3-0 in the tourny. The first game they defeated Back to Basics,  an All Star team from the Bronx, led by the outstanding play on both ends of the floor by probably the best point guard on LI - Tajric Boggs  of Longwood, and by the deadly shooting of guard RJ Hall of BayShore. The second game was a backyard brawl against the LI Knights that went into overtime. A three pointer and 2 key free throws by 6' 7 swing man Neal Fishenden of Sayville, along with a key putback by 6 '8 center Nick Sergio of Pat Med, keyed the victory. The third game against Saugertes All Stars and was a demonstration of what great D can do. A hounding man to man defense forced numerous turnovers and led to many fast breaks for the Avengers. Rob Hughes of Riverhead continually slashed through the defense for athletic finishes, John Groves from Pat Med  moved continually without the ball and finished with great consistancy, and the tiro of Sergio, Fishenden, and 6'7 Renyel Bullock of Riverhead, who has lost the past 2 HS seasons due to injuries, controled the inside and had between them over 10 blocks. Sam Bobley, a clever guard from North Shore, along with Justin Heredia from Pat Med, teamed with Boggs to continually pressure their guards and turn the ball over leading to numerous fast breaks and finishes by Hughes Groves and Fishenden.

Allstars  Tyshawn Bierria Basketball Memorial Classic in Flushing.  Tyshawn Bierria, a former player of TK All-Stars, was murdered while attending college at Delhi C.C. in upstate NY.  The TU 17U Team was 1-1 at the Classic.

Rising Stars 3rd At Nationals
The 13u Rising Stars team coached by Danny Gimpel finished 3rd in the country at the AAU D2 Nationals.   The team posted a 7-1 record before falling in the semi-finals to a good team from Texas.  The Rising Stars were led by forwards Romario Williams and Ike Ngwudo who dominated the paint and controlled the glass all tournament.  Point guard Tiquan Garner ran the show for the Stars and started the defense with his quickness and seed.  Tiquan averaged 8 assists per game and was the glue for the team.  Shooting guard Andrew Fellus made two big plays in the tournament with a 3 pointer with no time left to win a quarterfinal game and a big 3 point play in pool play to help the Stars advance.  Isaih Barnes was the defensive stopper and was always asked to guard the best player all tournament long.  Key reserves were Eric Kramer who supplied key outside shooting to spread the defense, Neil Cohen who scored in bunches, Harris Silverstein who was asked to guard bigger players while giving the team a spark offensively, and BJ Rivers who supplied key back up point guard minutes demonstrating his talent to run the team.  Congratulations to the Rising Stars and a job well done!

IS8 Underway
One of the Metropolitan Area's top Fall Leagues - IS8, got underway this past weekend. The league is an unusual mix of AAU teams and high school teams, and attracts participants from all over the East Coast. There are quite a few Long Island teams participating in the Queens based event, so we will try to keep you posted as news and results come in. We heard from the Rising Stars. They got off to frustrating start, leading most of the way, but then falling to the Playaz Juniors 64-63 in what would have been considered a big upset. They came back with a vengeance in game 2, overwhelming a big Brownsville team 65-30. We have stats from the Playaz game:
David Fogel, Hewlet, 22 points 6 rebounds
Josh Elbaum, SJB, 12 points 8 steals 5 assists
Kyle Shneider, Jericho, 10 points 4 steals 7 assists
Victor Holder, Upper Room,  7 points 10 rebounds
Patrick Wildes, Chaminade, 6 points 6 rebounds
Sean Wildes, Chaminade, 6 points 5 rebounds 3 steals
In other games, LIL Silverstein, led by George Beamon's 24 points, fell to the Panthers after giving up a third quarter lead. They lost their first game to Give and Go, so they are 0-2. The Silverstein team also features Justin Brown from Uniondale and Dan DiVietri from Chaminade. We'll get you the rest of the roster as soon as we can. ....Team Underrated defeated LTMR 91-71 behind John Ward-Adams (Center Moriches) 21pts (5-3ptrs), 3 assist and 4 steals, JJ Moore (Brentwood) 17pts.and 8 rebounds, and Andre St.Vital (Wyandanch) 17pts., 3assist, and 2steals. Bunky Reid Holds Off LuHi
In IS8 action, the Westbury based Bunky Reid All-Stars pressed their way to a solid halftime lead, and then held off a second half run by Long Island Lutheran for a 71-60 win. The key for Bunky Reid was their excellent  full court zone press, which was particularly effective on the small IS8 courts and accounted for most of their offense in the first half, when they built what turned out to be an insurmountable lead. Sheldon Hagigal finished with 25 points, 8 assists and 7 steals, Tyrese Redd scored 20 points and had 12 assists, and Sean Henry added 15 points, 20 rebounds, and 5 blocked shots .Their full IS8 roster is: Sean Henry LWA ,Tyrese Reed, Westbury, Shedon Hagigal, Westbury, Paris Abrams, Westbury, Chris Williams, LWA, Brain Hailey Westbury, Lamard Herron, Westbury,Josh Golson Westbury, and Josh Core, Westbury

Long Island Steps Up
At Summer Championships
There were outstanding players and teams from all over the region at the LongIslandBasketball.com Summer Championships, and Long Island based teams came through, winning all but one division. Team Underrated took the 17U crown in a terrific final against a combined Cotumaccio/Hersh Team. It was Team Buckets in the 15U Division, with an excellent New Jersey Hotshots squad finishing second. Reach One Teach One rolled through the 14U's, beating the Breakers in the chip, and it was the much improved Long Island Lightning/Law over the Kendall Madison Playaz in the 13U final, with the NYC Vipers finishing third. The Vipers missed the finals on a one point loss in overtime. In the 10U event, a very impressive Team Underrated easily took the crown, with a good Newburgh Blazers team finishing second.

Tobias Update
Hills West's Tobias Harris has soared towards the top of just about every ranking of college prospects after leading LuHi to a State Championship last season and then following that up with an outstanding travel season. Along the way, he has slimed down, gotten stronger, improved his lateral quickness, and is now on the wish list of just about every major college basketball program.  As we reported earlier, he will narrow down his list of prospective schools in the coming weeks , but still in the hunt are: Connecticut, Florida, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Maryland, Memphis, Louisville, Notre Dame, Rutgers, Syracuse, Tennessee, UCLA, Vanderbilt, Virginia, and West Virginia. To give you an idea of how far he has come in the eyes of the coaches and scouts, he is now the #5 ranked prospect in the Class of 2010 on Rivals.comthe #7 ranked prospect according to ESPN, and he has been selected to participate in the 2009 Boost Mobile Elite 24 event played at Rucker Park in New York City. The event features 24 of the highest rated prospects in the country and will be held FRIDAY, August 21st at 7 PM and then televised on ESPNU Saturday the 22nd.

Warriors Fall In Semifinals
The New York Warriors, based out of Long Island, were in Boston last weekend playing in a competitive open division. We went 3-1 in pool play in the toughest pool losing only to Lakeland storm by 1 point on a contested game winner. We beat the And-1 team who participated since And-1 was a sponsor. We also beat DM who had 2 6'9 players on the team, one who plays at UMass and the other who will be playing at UCONN this year (Alex Oriakhi). Notable Long Island Players were Devin Karch playing good all tournament playing tough defense and throwing down some nice dunks. Mike Crisci played tough all tournament and hit some big shots throughout. Jason Desimone hit some big shots early in the tournament and got a key rebound late in one game to guarantee us a playoff spot. We had great production from our bench also. We won two playoff games finally losing to team Louie in the semi's. It was a close game but we got off to a slow start. Was a fun tournament and was nice to see 20 teams in this highly competitive division.

Avengers Strong In New England
The LI Avengers won their pool at Hoop Group Jamfest and played in the Gold playoff this weekend. They pulled off a huge upset defeating the Donyell Marshall All-Stars in the first round of the playoffs, backing that up in the next round by defeating the Brooklyn Clippers, before falling to the Westchester Hawks in the quarter finals in a close defensive struggle that was marred by physical play and very inconsistant officiating. Playing for the Avengers were Tajric Boggs and Darien Davis from Longwood, Rasheen Moore and Rob Hughes from Riverhead, John Groves and Nick Sergio from Pat Med, RJ Hall from BayShore, Sam Bobley from North Shore, and Neal Fishenden from Sayville. The team features a stiffling man to man defense, and a wide open fast break attack off turnovers and missed shots. The team has only been playing together since the spring and has compiled an amazing record in some of the top tourneys in the east against experienced teams that in many cases have been together for four years.

Team Underrated 11U Champs
Team Underrated 11u Team travelled to Brewster Sports Center with 7 players and came out champions. Game 1 Team Underrated defeated The Bulldogs. Team Underrated jumped out a 15pt. lead. At half-time Team Underrated was up 12. In the beginning of the second half the lead ballooned to 20 points, but the bulldogs fought their way back and took the lead by 6 points with 3:23 left on the clock when the Bulldog coach was hit with a tech for disputing a call and that gave Team Underrated 4 FT's and Andre "Cookie Edwards" knocked down both FT's.  In the same possession Darius Chester hit a big three.  On the defensive end with time running out Blake Thompson used his football skills and stole a pass and broke out for a go-ahead layup which gave TU the win 51-50. Game 2 Team Underrated defeated CT. Premiere. Team Underrated was clicking on all cylinders with balance scoring with all players scoring. TU was led by Andre "Cookie" Edwards with 14 points. "Cookie" was on fire knocking 4 (3pters) and a put back. This was a long awaited contribution for "Cookie" who is working hard to again crack the starting line-up. The final score was 64-31. Other contributors were DC Chester 11pts., Wayne White with 9pts., Blake Thompson with 7, Malcolm Wynter with 6pts., and Mike finished with 4pts., Game 3 was the Championship game which pitted Team Underrated vs. The Minutemen. TU came out on fire and totally dominated the Minutemen. TU jumped out to a 20pt lead and never looked back. In that game TU was led by Darius Chester with 20pts., Wayne White 12pts., Blake Thompson 9pts., TU also had big defensive contributions from Mike Jones who played big for TU, consistantly through out the tourney. Final 60-23.

Five LI Teams In IS8 Playoffs
Although most Long Islanders are not familiar with it, the IS8 League based in Queens has a great history, and the New York City basketball community considers it to be one of their top fall leagues. Its somewhat unique, because both AAU and school teams compete, and all the games are played on middle school sized courts. Word is spreading, and more and more Long Island teams are participating each year, and finding out they can compete. In recent years, both St. Dominic and the Unique All-Stars have made runs at the title, and Danny Green's St. Mary's team did too. This year just might be the year we finally win one, with five Long Island teams qualifying for the playoffs (you must finish 1st or 2nd in your division to do so). They are:  Bay Shore, The Bunky Reid All-Stars, The Rising Stars, Team Underrated, and The Unique All-Stars. Best of luck to all of them! Here are their first round matchups:
Rising Stars vs New Rochelle Tue 10/7 @ 7pm
Bay Shore vs Brooklyn Ballers Wed10/8 @ 8:15pm
Unique All-Stars vs Team Tex Wed 10/8 @ 7pm

The Silver Bullets Boys 17U Varsity team is off to a 4-0 start in the Island Garden Varsity League. In their most recent win over a tough Hersh team, the Bullets went in front early and held the lead for most of the game. However, Hersh battled back in the second half and took a lead in the final 2 minutes. On the Bullets next possession, Theo Santos (St. John’s) hit a big three pointer, putting the Bullets back on top, forcing Hersh to foul, and Joe Dolisi (St. Anthony’s), Matt Duffy (Smithtown West) and Doug Poetzsch (St. Anthony’s)  hit their free throws down the stretch  to secure the 74-68 win. Poetzsch led the Bullets with 28..............
Team Underrated dropped a 100-97 decision to Hersh in overtime at the Funsport Brooklyn HS Classic quarterfinals. They gave up a four point lead with 21 seconds remaining in regulation. Cameron Barber had 33 points, and JJ More had 30.

Preseason League Updates
At IS8, the Unique All-Stars rocked the Lehigh Valley Elite, leading wire to wire and cruising to a 30 point win. Tobias Harris seemed to be OK after missing a game with an ankle injury. They are now 3-1 Harris finish the game with,  23 points, 15 rebounds, 6 assist, 4 block shots & 2 steals, Josh Malone, 22 points, 6 steals, 5 rebounds, & 4 assist, Tyler Harris, 16 points, 5 steals, 2 assist, Jerrone Maymon, who committed to Marquette, 24 points, 12 rebounds, 3 blocks & 4 assists, Justin Toussaint from Cordoza, 13 points, 3 steals, 4 rebounds & 4 assist. Off the bench, Brandon Williams St.Dominic and Daquan Pate from Hempstead gave a great effort in the win.........Team Underrated suffered their first loss, coming out flat, and then running into a red hot Sean Johnson from Christ The King, who wouldn't let them get back in the game. They also are 3-1......The Bunky Reid All Stars also moved to 3-1 with a big 84-74 win over The Players Club Sophs. Sheldon Hagigal had 27 points, 9 assist, and 7 steals, Khaleev Ginyard 17 points, and 5 assists, and Sean Henry added 12 points, 11 rebounds, an 8 blocked shots. .........At The Island Garden League, in the Eastern Division, St. Mary's went to 3-0, beating Lawrence Woodmere 50 - 41, while the Silver Bullets pulled into a tie with them, beating both Jericho and Hewlett to go to 3-0. In the Western Division, the LI Northstars and LIL Nick are both 3-0 after the Northstars added a win over LIL Pujol to their previous wins over the Bayhawks and Flyers Sheehy.

IS8 Recap
Good weekend at IS8 for Long Island teams. The Rising Stars are still looking like a serious contender after a good win over the NY Elite. So are the Bunky Reid All-Stars, who lost a first place face-off with the tough New Heights team, falling 80-72 after leading by 10 early. Paris Abrams had 31 points, including 5 three pointers, and Sheldon Hagigal 20 points,11 assists, and 5 steals. Lindenhurst picked up their first win, and St. Dom's picked up a split.

Island Garden Varsity League
The Island Garden Varsity Fall League is underway and two of Nassau's best hooked up in an old fashioned shootout, with Roslyn defeating Jericho 83-76. Roslyn was led by returning All-State player George Beamon, who poured in 34 pts. Jericho, which lost their entire starting five to graduation, showed they have plenty of gas left in the tank. Kyle Shneider led them with 31 pts, including six 3 pointers. Roslyn is now 2-0 and Jericho 0-1. Another one of the favorites, St. Mary's, is also off to a 2-0 start in the East Division, with wins over South Side and LIL Ruh. Flyers Wildes and Great Neck South are both 2-0 as well. LIL Nick is alone at 3-0 in the West Division. There are 40 teams entered in the boy's varsity divisions this season.

Unique 2-1/ Harris Sprains Ankle
Tobias Harris, who is playing for the Unique All-Stars at IS8 instead of LuHi, his new high school team, sprained his ankle down the stretch of a tight game on Saturday, and Unique ended up giving up an 8 point lead and losing 66-64 to the Juice All-Stars and Lincoln's Lance Stephenson. Unique only had 5 players, which seems to be common at IS8, so Harris remained in the game despite the injury.  On Sunday, playing without Tobias, Unique went 2-0 as brother Tyler Harris and the rest of the team stepped up in wins over FTGOTN and the Brooklyn Rams. Tyler had 37 points and 10 rebounds in the two games, Babylon's JT Pate 32 points, Deer Park's Josh Malone 25 points and 16 rebounds, and Gerard LLoyd of Hills West 12 points and 10 assists.

Warriors Program Update
The Long Island based New York Warriors program did well at two recent events. At the Tom Casey Memorial 3 on 3 Tournament, they played the HS division with Jason Desimone, Devin Karch, Ismael Pierre, and Marquis Posey and won the division, going unbeaten. They also played in the college division with Mike Crisci, Tyler Harvey, and Devin Karch (played in both). They won this division as well, also going undefeated.
They also won the Hoop City Tournament in Pa., beating a hoop city team in the championship game.  The only two players on the roster from New York for this tournament were Ismael Pierre (Hempstead) and Devin Karch (Locust Valley).  Their leading scorers were both from Pennsylvania. they were Keith Whitenight and Eric O'Hora (Holy Cross-Pennsylvania). Devin Karch played on the Long Island Empire Team this summer.
