Rising Stars Win Super Regional
The Long Island Rising Stars won the 17U Super Regional held this past weekend at the Island Garden.
After losing their first game to Long Island Lightning Silverstein, which features George Beamon of Roslyn and Justin Brown of Uniondale, they reeled off four straight wins to set up a rematch with Silverstein in an all Long Island Final. It was a nip and tuck first half, with Beamon and Brown doing the bulk of the scoring for Lightning Silverstein, but in the second half the Rising Stars turned up the defensive pressure and took command of the game, pulling away for a 68-53 victory. This year's Rising Stars team features Josh Elbaum of St John The Baptist, Patrick and Sean Wildes of Chaminade, Kyle Shneider and Zach Reimer of Jericho, David Fogel of Hewlet, Victor Holder of Upper Room, Bill Townsend of Our Savior New American, and Jamel Flash of West Hempstead. The win qualifies them as a #1 seed in their pool at the AAU Nationals, while LI Lightning Silverstein, the GOSH Warriors, and LI LIghtning Kelly also qualified for the nationals by advancing to the final four. The Lightning defeated the Home club New York Gauchos yesterday by 10 in semifinals after being up 23 in the second half the gauchos started to cut into the lead. The momentum was changed when the assistant coach caught a technical foul, and Omar Calhoun Jr.of the Gauchos caught fire and hit four 3-point field goals in a row to help bring the lead down to 11. After a timeout the Lightning composed themselves and steadied the ship to streak and cruise the rest of the way to a win. The Midgets as they are so kindly refererred to Severio Ford, Myron Hickman, and Jamel Torrence played suffocating defense on the Gaucho ball handlers doing their best to keep them out of the Lane. When ball handlers got Kimari Murphy and Nkereuwem Okoro were in the lane to block and alter shots.

Team Underrated Results
The Team Underrated Open team (Unsigned Seniors) traveled to Germantown, Maryland this past weekend for the DC Metro Showcase. The showcase featured a number of good teams from as far away as Canada and placed strong emphasis on unsigned seniors in the 17/u-open division. Overall we played well finishing 4-1 but ran out of gas in the end losing to a tough primetime team in the semifinals. Charles “Snax” Joseph (South Shore) played extremely well grabbing 70 rebounds in the 5 games and punishing people on the low block. Fred Jeter (Amityville) was active inside blocking and altering shots. Billy and Brandin Butler (Floral Park) did a great job running the show, getting everyone involved and forcing turnovers on defense .Ben Asher (Oyster Bay) also locked up on defense and Chauncey Gilliam (Brewster Academy), and Hanif Molloy (Walt Whitman) did an excellent job getting to the rim and making things happen as we mostly ran a 4 guard offense which was a successful formula for us all weekend. I thank Andre Edwards for his continued support as well as Coach Nima Omidvar for running a great tournament. There were many colleges as well as scouting services in attendance which is always very helpful. This was our second year attending and I strongly recommend for coaches to add this tournament to your schedule next year as it is well run, has very good competition from 11/u up to 17/u and is a great way to start off your travel season as it is the first big east coast event of the spring. You can check it out at Dcmetroshowcase.com. As the Spring travel season begins it is our goal for all of our young men who are currently or formerly involved with the team to be able to play college basketball somewhere next season. With continued work in the classroom and the attendance of a few more exposure events we believe we will achieve our goal.
Warriors Take Top Gun
The New York Warriors (based out of Long Island) won the Top Gun Tournament this past weekend. Playing was Jason Desimone, Devin Karch, Joey Wood, Marquis Posey, Ismael Pierre, Steve Morse, and Omari Greene. The Warriors went undefeated in the tournament using their quickness, size, and shooting to compliment each other and play a well-balanced tournament.

It will be an outstanding three days of basketball with emphasis on fundamentals as well as the development of shooting skills. In addition to being trained for three consecutive days by these two exceptional coaches, those players who are interested in trying out for Long Island Lightning in January will receive a written evaluation that will be forwarded to Lightning coaches and administrators for use during the team selection process. This will afford players a greater opportunity to be evaluated over a three day period rather than just being limited to the one day tryout.
