Knights Fall Short
The Long Island Knights program took another big step forward when two of their teams advanced out of their pools at Hoop Mountain's New York Metro Showdown. The Mosley 17U team went all the way to the championship game before falling, while the 14U Prendergast team finished a strong 3-1, getting eliminated after playing back to back games in a hot gym.

Summer Recruiting
For teenagers in most sports--basketball included--the glory of playing organized competition often comes in representing your high school. But when it comes to increasing your chances at a scholarship, summer basketball is where you need to shine. Why is that? Why does high school bring glory and school pride, but summer ball "pays the bills," so to speak? GO TO IHOOPS ARTICLE BY RYAN WOOD

Summer
Championships
KNULIFE captured the 15U Title at the LongIslandBasketball.com SUMMER CHAMPIONSHIPS, twice coming from behind to defeat Reach One Teach One in a terrific Championship Series. The Malik Sealy All-Stars were 14U Champs, winning the age group convincingly, with the Long Island Knights runners up. FYA took the 13U title, defeating Brentwood's Finest in the chip of a very strong division, and the Baldwin Blue Devils came out on top in the 10U division, also coming from behind to defeat the Great Neck All-Stars. The Varsity Division Champion was never decided, with the final called off after tempers flared late in the second half of the hotly contested match-up between Team Buckets and The Long Island Knights. To recognize their outstanding seasons up to that point in very competitive divisions, Team Buckets was awarded the 17U Title, and the Knights the 18U MORE LATER

The Wizards impressively dominated the 5th Grade division.

Long Island At IS8
Harborfields did something rare for a Long Island high school team - they advanced out of their pool at IS8 and won their first round playoff game against Philly's Huntington Park 73-54. IS8 is based in Queens, and mixes AAU and school teams together, with only the very best school teams able to compete against the all-star squads. In their second round game, they faced a towering Shooting Stars team, bigger at every position by 3-4 inches, and it looked like they would get blown right out of the gym early on, falling behind 15-1, but a 12-3 run got them back into it, and then a three pointer by Matt Mcleod and a fast break lay-up by Nick Fessendan brought them within 5 at the half. They rallied to take a 30-29 lead on a three pointer by Jo Jo Savaglia, and then battled right down to the final buzzer, trailing by 2 with 20 seconds remaining on a three point play by Mcleod, but two Shooting Stars free throws made it a 62-58 final. The Bunky Reid All-Stars and Team Buckets also advanced out of their pool, but unfortunately met in the first round, with Bunky Reid rocking Buckets behind 24 points from Chavaughn Lewis and 18 from Paris Abrams. The All-Stars then fell in the second round, dropping an 81-64 decision to the Playaz Seniors in a game that was closer than the final score.

Fall Preseason Reports
The Bunky Reid All-Stars won their IS8 opener 73-67 over NIA Prep from Newark, NJ - a semifinalist at IS8 last season. Paris Abrams exploded for 34 points and Chavaughn Lewis added 17.
LongIslandbasketball.com's Summer Champion Team Buckets crushed Thomas Edison from NYC 80-46 in their opener at the Beacon 158 Back-to-School Tournament. Lindenhurst's Stu Warren had a game high 19 points, while Baldwin's Brandon Williams and Hills West's Emile Blackman added 16 each. Shaq Mosley from Uniondale finished with 12

AAU Nationals Update
A number of Long Island based teams participated in the 2010 AAU National Championships, which were played in facilities spread out around the country, including sites in Arkansas, Florida, Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia.  In the 11u (5th Grade) D2 Championship Classic Division, the Hollis All-Stars went 6-1 and defeated the Tennessee Thunder 33-30 in the championship game. The All-Stars managed to capture the title despite having only six players, all of whom were from Long Island or Queens.  “This was a great experience,  to see young players have the determination and the will to win,”  head coach Donald Francois said. Francois’s team was the first squad to win a national championship in the 30-year history of the Hollis Biddies organization.  And not only did they make history--they did it in heart-pounding fashion, winning six straight after dropping the opener, and beating a strong MABC team from Boston with a shot at the buzzer. In D2 of the 12u(6th Grade) division, the Bombers went 2-1 in pool play and lost their opening round game in the consolation tournament. Despite being hampered by player injuries and illnesses. In the 16U D1 division, the Rising Stars went 3-0 in pool play but lost their first round game in the Championship bracket and lost their first round consolation game. In the 17U D2 division, the Baldwin Blue Devils lost two out of three in pool play but bounced back to claim second place in the Classic bracket.  The Blue Devils defeated the Florida Tar Heels 66-57, the Providence Storm 71-48, the TAB Spurs 54-42 and Long Island Lightning- Smocovich 56-48 on their way to the championship game.  The Blue Devils lost 73-43 in the final to the Fab 5. In the 17U D1 division, the Rising Stars won all three games to finish first in their pool before losing 68-51 to HYCP Elite in the second round of Championship bracket play.  The Rising Stars defeated the Boston Warriors Elite 73-53 in their first consolation game, but lost 97-64 to Rich Soil (Team Next) in the next consolation game and were eliminated from the tournament. Long Island Lightning- Dingle (Gold) went 3-0 in pool play and advanced to the Championship bracket.  They defeated NC Athletics East 64-52. MBA Hoops Elite 69-63, and NC Athletic 80-66 before falling 90-55 to St. Louis Gameface.  In the consolation bracket, LIL-Dingle beat South Florida Elite 74-73, Da House Lighthouse 82-74, and the NY Gauchos 62-58 to claim 6th place. Long Island Lightning- Dingle (Blue) went undefeated in pool play and qualified for the Championship bracket.  They beat the LA Roundballers 72-51, the SYF Players 77-76, and Crusader Nation 61-53, before falling 61-54 to AR Wings Elite in the quarterfinals.  LIL-Dingle then lost to St. Louis Gameface in the quarterfinal consolation. Congratulations to all that participated!

AAU Scraps Age Groups
AAU Boys Basketball will scrap the age based divisions it has used for years at the District, Regional, and National Championships, and will adopt grade based divisions starting with the current AAU season. Each grade division will have a maximum permissible age, but the age limits are generous and should allow almost every player to play at his grade level. For example, a player in the 9th grade division can be up to 16 years old. The age determination date remains 9/1, so this season it will be 9/1/11. In the example above, a 9th grader can be 16, but cannot turn 17 before 9/1/11 and play as a 9th grader.

Long Island Takes Silver
Long Island, represented by the Sid Jacobson JCC 16U Team, advanced to the Gold Medal Game at the 2010 Macabbi Games, falling to Los Angeles 66-51 to bring home the Silver Medal. The games were played at the University of Nebraska/Omaha this year. The Long Island team  went 4-0 in pool play, defeating Palo Alto 78-46, North Miami Beach 66-55, Omaha 86 – 58 and San Diego by 7 in overtime. In the San Diego game, Long Island rallied from a 9 point 4th quarter deficit, with LuHi's Zach Goodman nailing a long-range three to tie it with less than 2 minutes to go in regulation. Mikey Friedman (Syosset) led the way with 18 points in the 4th quarter and overtime periods, and Great Neck South's Daniel Belmont added 10 4th quarter points. In the Medal Rounds, they first defeated Israel 73 - 61, with Goodman, Friedman and Alec Ludwig (Great Neck) playing lock down "D" and scoring in double figures, and Roslyn's Andrew Wolfe dominating inside. They beat St. Louis 59-42 in the semifinals to clinch a medal behind 17 points from Goodman before falling to the team from L.A. in the final. The L.A. game was tied going into the 4th quarter but foul trouble was LI's downfall.

Pythons Nike Champs
The Pythons defeated the Reach-One-Teach-One Hawks 50-47 in the 16U championship game of the Nike Swoosh Summer League.  On a beautiful night to be outdoors, the game was played in the cool open air of Martin “Bunky” Reid Park in Westbury.  Although the Pythons led from start to finish, the Hawks were never out of striking distance and made a series of runs, but couldn’t manage to close the gap.  Both teams looked energized from the opening tip, attacking the basket aggressively and going hard on defense to boot. Charles McCann and Dante Agnew from St. Mary;'s and Tiquan Garner from LuHi set the pace for the Pythons early, scoring all 15 of the squad’s first quarter points. Tony Wilson had 8 in the opening period for Reach-One-Teach-One, but after one they trailed 15-10. McCann continued to take it to the rim for the Pythons in the second quarter, generating contact and drawing fouls.  Wilson matched his intensity for the Hawks, scoring on tough drives to the basket.  At halftime, the score was 24-20 in favor of the Pythons, and they came out firing in the second half behind sharp shooting from Chancellor Ellis, who had 8 points in the third quarter.  Floral Park's Shamoy Macintosh came alive for Reach-One-Teach-One, knocking down a couple of treys and scoring 9 points in the period after having only a bucket to his name in the first half, but after three his Hawks were down 41-31. Things started to get heated in the fourth quarter, as both teams attacked the basket and played tough, physical defense. The Hawks were able to capitalize on all the contact by drawing fouls, and Markell French and Mcintosh made the Pythons pay at the line, eventually cutting the lead to 3 with seconds remaining.  They couldn’t come up with a steal on the final possession, however, and the Pythons got the victory. Wilson led all scorers with 20 for the Hawks, and Mcintosh added 17.  McCann led the Pythons with 11, and Ellis had 10.
