Long Island All-Star Game
Suffolk Rocks Nassau
Suffolk County once again dominated the Long Island All-Star Game, building a 31 point lead and then cruising to a 117-102 victory over Nassau. It was Suffolk's 7th win in the series over the last 8 years. Sixteen first half points by John Glenn's Phil Izevbehai and 11 by Deer Park's Josh Malone, and a late first half 18-2 run gave Suffolk a commanding 24 point halftime lead, and then big second halves by Greenport's Ryan Creighton and John Nielsen of Port Jefferson preserved the victory. Roslyn's George Beamon tried to keep Nassau in the game in the first half with 9 points, and East Meadow's Azfar Kahn got hot in the second half and tried to rally them, but Nassau never could get back within striking distance.
Nassau actually jumped out to a 5-0 lead to start the game, which this year was held at Stony Brook's auxiliary gym because the main arena is undergoing renovations. The lead didn't last long. Izevbehai got Suffolk going with an assortment of athletic moves, and his two free throws gave them a lead they would never relinquish. Copiague's Mervin Springer drained a three pointer from the right side to put Suffolk up 10, but it was still a game at this point, and a 3 pointer by Kahn brought Nassau back within 4 with 4:40 to go in the half. It turned out to be as close as they would get. Nielsen's three pointer made it a 10 point game again, then two free throws by Kamil Parzych of Lindenhurst at the 2:15 mark of the first half put Suffolk up 14, and then a dunk, steal and layup by Josh Malone and it was suddenly 50-32 with 1:45 to go.
A Parzych three pointer, followed by a three by Malone, and it was 58-34 Suffolk. A baseline drive by Devin Karch of Locust Valley broke the run, but a fast break layup by Malone at the buzzer and it was 60-36 at the half. The second half was never competitive. Nielsen's three pointer with 11:22 to go in the game put Suffolk up 91-60. A late run by Nassau got the lead down to 17, but even that glimmer of hope was quickly snuffed by a baseline drive from Greg Kelm of Lindenhurst, who scored, drew the foul, and converted the three point play for a 20 point lead. There were two scorebooks being kept, and they didn't agree on some of the player totals. Izevbehai led all scorers with 23, Malone had 20, Creighton 16 and Nielsen 13. Beamon finished with 17 for Nassau, Khan had 16, and Uniondale's Justin Brown 15.
