Amityville's A.J. Price, who had a solid rookie season for the Indiana Pacers and hoped to challenge for the starters role at point guard this season, suffered an offseason knee injury back in May while playing in a charity game here on Long Island. He is still recovering and expected to miss training camp - not a good thing for a young player trying to establish himself in the NBA - but Price has a history of overcoming injuries and adversity, and the Pacers remain high on the former UConn star.

Dave Mock Passes Away
It is with great sadness that we report the passing of our friend Dave Mock, the voice of Nassau County basketball and of Westbury High School. He died December 26th at the age of 41 after suffering a stroke back in September. All of us that knew him know what a good soul he was and how passionate he was about basketball, his home town of Westbury, and his career as a broadcaster. He will be sorely missed and no Nassau County playoff game or Westbury home game will seem the same without him. A memorial will be held for him next Saturday January 9, 2010 at 3pm at Westbury Community Church, 700 Prospect Avenue, Westbury
Dr. J Trivia
We all know Roosevelt's Julius Erving was named one of the 50 greatest basketball players of all time, but those of you that never got to see him play probably assume it was all because of his ability to score, often with spectacular dunks. That's certainly part of it, but when Dr. J retired in 1987, he was #1 on pro basketball's career steals list and #6 on the career blocked shots list. That' s a rare combination of skills, and only a small handful of players in NBA history appear in the top 6 on the career scoring, blocked shots and steals lists.

Both will be in attendance at the ceremony held at The Suffolk Y JCC, 74 Hauppauge Road, Commack, starting at 10:30a.m. For more information, call Chris at (631) 462-9800, ext. 125.

Terrell Holloway (Hempstead) (Xavier)
The sophomore guard was a key contributor throughout the season for one of the Atlantic 10's best teams, averaging 12.1 points per game and leading the conference in free throw shooting at 84.5%. He was also instrumental in the Musketeers's run to the Sweet 16.
Charles Jenkins (Hofstra)
The junior guard was among the top 10 in the Colonial Athletic Association in scoring, assists, field goal percentage, free throw percentage, steals, and three point percentage. He was also selected as the 2010 Colonial Athletic Association men’s basketball Player of the Year.
Scott Machado (St. Mary's) (Iona)

Michael Sands (Carey) (Yale)
The junior forward led the Bulldogs in rebounding and was second in scoring.
Al Skinner/BC Part Ways
Al Skinner--a Long Island native, and Boston College's all-time winningest coach--has parted ways with the BC basketball program. Although Skinner was not officially fired, the move had all the ingredients of a firing: Skinner's salary will be paid for the remaining three years on his contract, and BC athletic director Gene DeFillipo said it was clear that a change needed to be made. "Change is good sometimes. How many basketball coaches have been in the same position for 13 years? Very, very few," DeFillippo told ESPN.com. Skinner was hired at BC after coaching for nine seasons at Rhode Island, where he led the Rams to three 20-win seasons and four postseason appearances. The Eagles won a total of only 32 games in Skinner's first three seasons at BC, and finished in last place in the Big East in the 1999-2000 season. But in 2000-01 Skinner led the Eagles to a 27-win season, a Big East conference championship and a #3-seed in the NCAA tournament. He was named the National Coach of the Year for engineering the turnaround, which marked the first time a team had ever gone from worst to first in one season in the Big East. In 2004-05 Skinner's Eagles won their first 20 games--a school record--and went on to take a share of the Big East conference regular-season title. Skinner received Big East Coach of the Year honors that season. In 2005-06 Skinner guided the Eagles to 28 victories, the highest total in school history. The team received a #4 seed in the NCAA tournament and advanced to the Sweet 16. Overall, Skinner compiled a 247-165 record at BC and led the school to seven NCAA tournament births in ten seasons beginning in 2001. Despite Skinner's success, low attendance at home games was a continuing concern, as was Skinner's inability to land big-name recruits. "We want a coach who is going to play a very exciting brand of basketball," DeFillippo told ESPN.com. "...We want a team and a coach who will relate to our student body, to our faculty, to our staff, to our alumni and our fans. " Within days of Skinner's firing, BC announced the hiring of former Cornell coach Steve Donahue as Skinner's replacement. Skinner was also passed over in both St Johns's and Clemson's coaching searches despite interviewing for both jobs. But coach Skinner's impressive resume and success in turning lightly-recruited players such as Troy Bell, Jared Dudley and Craig Smith into NBA draftees suggests that he should receive another head coaching opportunity, probably sooner rather than later.
Welsh Resigns
New Hofstra men's basketball coach Tim Welsh resigned after he was arrested and charged with drunken driving.
The Baldwin Blue Devils 17U boys are going to the AAU National Championships in Orlando. Coached by Ralph Crespo and Marcus Everton, the team is composed entirely of players from Baldwin and Freeport who've been playing together for a number of years. This will be their third straight appearance in the Nationals. Good luck guys!
Long Island Knights Update
LongIslandBasketball.com's new Long Island Knights AAU program continues to make a name for itself! Savino New Adelphi Coach
Dominick Savino has been named the new Head Men's Basketball coach at Adelphi. He was an assistant coach for the Panthers for the past three seasons and has almost 30 years of coaching experience. MORE
Joe Jones BC Assistant
Joe Jones--a graduate of Half Hollow Hills West--recently stepped down as head coach of the Columbia men's basketball team in order to join former Cornell coach Steve Donahue's staff at Boston College. "We are extremely grateful for all of Joe’s hard work on behalf of Columbia and our men’s basketball team over the past seven years," athletic director M. Dianne Murphy told the Columbia Spectator. "His commitment to Columbia, the men’s basketball team and our student-athletes made a tremendous impact. Our men’s basketball program is in much better shape now than when he first arrived, and for that we are very thankful."Jones was hired in April of 2003, and he inherited a team that had won only two games and had gone 0-14 in the Ivy League. In the 2003-04 season, Jones's first at the helm, the Lions won ten games and had a 6-8 record in league play. By 2006-07, the Lions were a 16-win team that was in competition for the Ivy League title. Overall, Jones compiled an 86-108 record, including a 39-59 record in the Ivy League, in his seven seasons at Columbia. Jones's teams were always strong defensively, and he will be an asset to Boston College as a defensive tactician. And if Jones succeeds as an assistant coach in the ACC, don't be surprised to see him take a higher-profile head coaching position in the near future.

Long Island NBA Update
A.J. Price of Amityville had a strong rookie season for the Indiana Pacers, averaging 7.3 points and 1.9 assists in only 15.4 minutes per game. Price's playing time steadily increased throughout the year, jumping from an average of 8 minutes per game in the season's first two months to almost 20 minutes per game by April. Price will be in the second year of his two-year guaranteed rookie contract in 2010-11, which means that he'll be playing for his NBA life. He could very well have a breakout season.
Danny Green of North Babylon didn't play very much for the Cleveland Cavaliers, which wasn't too surprising considering that he was competing for minutes with someone by the name of Lebron James. Green's strongest stretch came in January and February, when he averaged 3.6 points per game on 58% shooting over 7 games. On the whole, though, Green spent much more time in a suit than he did on the court. Fortunately for him, the whole Lebron thing might not be as much of a problem next year.
Mike James, also of Amityville, struggled through an injury-plagued 2009-10 in which he played only four games for the Washington Wizards and averaged 4.5 points per game. James, who was in his second season with Washington, was bought out and waved by the club after they were unable to find him a new home at the trading deadline. The 34-year old James, who has played for nine different teams in nine NBA seasons, will be a valuable free-agent pickup for a team looking for someone who can provide veteran leadership and playoff experience.
Casey New Coach At CW Post
C.W. Post has hired Chris Casey, a former St. John's assistant, to take over as head coach. Casey served under coach Norm Roberts for the last six years and played a large role as a recruiter and opponent scout. He also had player development, on-court instruction, and practice and game preparation responsibilities. Before St. John's Casey was an assistant for three seasons at Central Connecticut State University, where he worked with forward Corley Edwards, who was a second-round draft pick of the Sacramento Kings in 2003. Casey also had prior head coaching experience at Rutgers University-Newark from 1998 to 2001.
Basabe To Iowa
Glen Cove's Melsahn Basabe, who goes to prep school, committed to Iowa of the Big Ten. Basabe was a late bloomer that grew 6 inches in high school, and is now 6'7 with a 7'2 wingspan. He is a big time rebounder on both ends of the floor.
District Championships
The following teams advanced to the AAU Metropolitan District Semifinals:
16U
Kendal Madison
LI Lightning/Nick
NY Falcons
OC Elite
14U

Cassara New Hofstra Coach
Mo Cassara was named the new Hofstra University head men's basketball coach. Cassara comes to Hofstra after serving for the last four years as an assistant coach at Boston College. While with the Eagles, he was responsible for recruiting, scouting, on-floor coaching, off-season workouts and scheduling. He was originally hired to be an assistant to Tim Welsh, who resigned after being arrested for DWI. Cassara said he would retain Hofstra’s new staff.
Coen Signs Extension
Northeastern coach Bill Coen, who is from Port Jefferson, signed a multiyear contract extension after leading his team to back to back postseason appearances.
Cosgrove To Trinity College
Adelphi Coach James Cosgrove resigned to accept the position of head men's basketball coach at Trinity College in West Hartford, Connecticut. He leaves with a career record of 166-77.

Defending Long Island Class D Champion Greenport took an early 14-6 lead, with Tremayne Hansen scoring the first two baskets of the game and adding a third, and Jalen Shelby adding back to back three pointers, but Randall Colson got Sachem East on a roll with a dunk, and back to back three pointers by Dan Candemeres and C. J. Everson gave them a 16-15 halftime advantage. East built an 8 point second half lead on two more 3's by Candemeres and led by 6 with 1:56 remaining, but Greenport rallied dramaticly to tie it at 40 all on a runner by Brandon Pettaway and a twisting/turning pull-up jumper by Dantré Langhorne just before the buzzer. In the 2 minute extra period, East drew first blood with 42 seconds remaining on a putback by Colson, and Candemeres iced it with two free throws to give them a 44-40 overtime victory and the Brookhaven Summer League Varsity Championship. In the JV final, upset minded Rocky Point took a 14-7 lead, but Riverhead went on a 13-0 run to move in front and led 33-23 with 2:55 remaining. A late run by the Eagles brought them within 5, but the Blue Waves held on for a 35-30 win.

The L.A. game was tied going into the 4th quarter but foul trouble was LI's downfall.
Sledge And Harris Updates
Since last season ended, there has been considerable speculation among our readers that Hills West stars Tavon Sledge and Tyler Harris would both leave the school and not return for another run at a state championship. To the best of our knowledge, none of the rumors are true and both will be back gunning for a second straight trip to Glens Falls.
AAU Nationals Update

St. John's Interested In Sledge
Former St. John's head coach Norm Roberts had trouble recruiting players from Long Island over the years, but it appears that recent Red Storm hire Steve Lavin is trying to reverse the trend. According to sources, Lavin has extended a scholarship offer to Hills West's All-Long Island point guard, Tavon Sledge, whose coach, Bill Mitaritonna, played for St. John's. If Sledge accepts the offer, he'll become a member of a recruiting class that already includes one of the top players in the country, and could play a vital role in helping coach Lavin return the Red Storm program to the top of the Big East. Those of you with a sense of history will remember that many of the good St. John's teams of past years featured at least one key player from Long Island - players like Bill Wennington, Zendon Hamilton, Shelton Jones, and many others.

Baldwin Over Uniondale For Title
In a rematch of last season’s Nassau County Class AA championship game, the Baldwin Bruins faced off against the Uniondale Knights for the Hempstead Summer League Championship. It was clear from the opening tip that there is no love lost between the two squads, and that both teams were going to compete with playoff-level intensity. The standing-room only crowd that packed the small Hempstead Recreation Center only added to the atmosphere. Uniondale took the lead early behind sharp shooting from Shaq Mosley, who nailed two three pointers in the game’s opening minutes, and Sean Brown, who grabbed nine rebounds in the first quarter alone. Eyituoyo Ofuya kept Baldwin in the game with six early points, but by the end of the first Uniondale had a 14-10 advantage. The Bruins came out swinging in the second quarter, ratcheting up their defensive intensity, and they managed to stifle Uniondale’s scorers, holding the Knights to only 9 points in the period. Baldwin’s shooters, meanwhile, found their mark, as Aaron Greene added 10 points in the period and Brandon Williams 7, and Kyle Richardson cleaned up under the boards with 6 rebounds. The momentum of the game was now clearly in Baldwin’s favor, as the Bruins’s aggressive defense disoriented the Knights and forced them into turnovers and bad shots. Baldwin looked like the more energized team, and they had a 30-23 lead going into halftime. The trend continued in the third period, with the Bruins wreaking havoc with their full-court trap, scoring 15 unanswered points in the opening minutes of the half. Baldwin’s run was catalyzed by Williams, who scored 7 of the 15 points, found his teammates for easy baskets on the break, and swiped the ball from Uniondale’s guards in the backcourt to set up the fast-break opportunities. Uniondale fought back behind strong play from Mosley, Roderick Epps and Kenny Woodard, who scored 15 of the team’s 18 points in the period, but after three the Knights still trailed, 51-41. The lead hovered around 10-12 points for the opening minutes of the the fourth quarter, until Uniondale’s full-court press started to rattle the Bruins, whose turnovers let the Knights climb back into the game. With 2:30 remaining the Bruins’s lead had been sliced to 4, but it seemed to be a case of too-little too-late for Uniondale, as the Baldwin boys regained their composure down the stretch behind some clutch baskets and free-throw shooting from Ofuya. Despite 8 points from Epps, the Knights just didn’t have enough left in the tank to close the gap, and Baldwin took home the summer league championship, 62-57. Greene led Baldwin with 19 points, and he was awarded the MVP trophy after the game. Ofuya had 17, and Williams added 16 points and 5 assists for the Bruins. Uniodale’s top scorers were Mosley, who had 15 points, Epps, who added 15 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists, and Woodard, who had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. At the end of the day, one thing was clear to everyone in attendance: with the level of talent that was on display, this will not be the last time these two teams meet in a big game.
Both semifinal games in the Hempstead Summer League turned out to be great matchups. In the opener, Uniondale jumped out to an early 11-4 lead over Elmont behind some sharp shooting from Shaq Mosley, and led 14-8 at the end of one, but Elmont fought back and went ahead thanks to a scoring barrage led by Anthony Elechi, who had 10 of his game-high 23 points in the second period. The Spartans led 31-27 at the half, but Uniondale managed to cut the lead to one after three. The fourth quarter belonged to Uniondale, and especially to Roderick Epps, who scored 12 of his team’s 22 points down the stretch. Sean Brown’s play was also key, as he took advantage of a few nice passes from Mosley to score key baskets that helped swing the momentum of the game to the Knights. It was a 60-52 final. In the second semifinal matchup, Baldwin came out firing behind Aaron Greene, Brandon Williams, Eyituoyo Ofuya and Karim Daniel, taking a 19-13 lead after one. Harborfields answered back in the second, as Nick Fessenden scored 8 points in the low block, Joe Savaglia knocked down a few big shots from the wing, Lucas Woodhouse dished out 6 assists (he finished with 13), and Matt Mcleod cleaned up under the boards, and the game was tied at halftime. In the third quarter, Baldwin’s Ofrey and Williams supplied some much-needed scoring punch, but Harborfields kept pace and the game remained tied after three. The fourth quarter was a tight one. Baldwin took a 7 point lead early in the period, but the Tornadoes fought back, and a basket from Mcleod put them up one with two minutes remaining. Baldwin’s ferocious defense--along with some clutch late-game free throws from Greene, as well as buckets from Daniel, Ofuya and Williams-- turned the tide and sealed the game for the Bruins, as they escaped with a hard-fought 71-68 victory and a match-up with arch rival Uniondale in the final.
Floyd Over Longwood
William Floyd defeated Longwood 56-49 to capture the Butch Dellacave Summer League Championship behind a dominating performance from Anthony White. It was an intensely competitive game from start to finish, with Longwood jumping out to an early 11-2 lead behind a flurry of baskets by Paris Parks, but Floyd stormed back with a 24-8 run to go up 26-19 at halftime. A stellar offensive performance by White forced Longwood into a zone defense to start the second half, but Floyd’s shooters made Longwood pay and the Colonials were able to extend their lead. The Lions managed to cut it to five with 10 minutes remaining as their full-court trap initially rattled the Colonials, but Floyd regrouped and made all the shots they needed to make down the stretch to come away with the victory. The crowd was surprisingly raucous for a summer league game, and White put on a show that was worthy of attention. He dominated the game on both ends of the floor, blocking shots and grabbing rebounds by the bundle as well as orchestrating the offense. He created almost as many shots for his teammates as he drained himself, which was no small feat considering that he finished with a team-high 25 points. Not to be outdone, Parks was a one-man wrecking crew for Longwood, scoring an incredible 36 of this team’s 49 points. He showed of all the facets of his offensive game, beating his defender to the bucket on one possession and draining a three-pointer on the next. Looking ahead, it’s clear that Parks and White will be two of the top players on Long Island this coming season, and you can count on seeing more eye-popping performances from each of them. And stay tuned--both guys still have 3+ months of off-season time to learn some new tricks!

The Pythons defeated the Reach-One-Teach-One Hawks 50-47 in the 16U championship game of the Nike Swoosh Summer League. On a beautiful night to be outdoors, the game was played in the cool open air of Martin “Bunky” Reid Park in Westbury. Although the Pythons led from start to finish, the Hawks were never out of striking distance and made a series of runs, but couldn’t manage to close the gap. Both teams looked energized from the opening tip, attacking the basket aggressively and going hard on defense to boot. Charles McCann and Dante Agnew from St. Mary;'s and Tiquan Garner from LuHi set the pace for the Pythons early, scoring all 15 of the squad’s first quarter points. Tony Wilson had 8 in the opening period for Reach-One-Teach-One, but after one they trailed 15-10. McCann continued to take it to the rim for the Pythons in the second quarter, generating contact and drawing fouls. Wilson matched his intensity for the Hawks, scoring on tough drives to the basket. At halftime, the score was 24-20 in favor of the Pythons, and they came out firing in the second half behind sharp shooting from Chancellor Ellis, who had 8 points in the third quarter. Floral Park's Shamoy Macintosh came alive for Reach-One-Teach-One, knocking down a couple of treys and scoring 9 points in the period after having only a bucket to his name in the first half, but after three his Hawks were down 41-31. Things started to get heated in the fourth quarter, as both teams attacked the basket and played tough, physical defense. The Hawks were able to capitalize on all the contact by drawing fouls, and Markell French and Mcintosh made the Pythons pay at the line, eventually cutting the lead to 3 with seconds remaining. They couldn’t come up with a steal on the final possession, however, and the Pythons got the victory. Wilson led all scorers with 20 for the Hawks, and Mcintosh added 17. McCann led the Pythons with 11, and Ellis had 10.

Hagigal, Harris Leave Island
All State and All Long Island guard Sheldon Hagigal of Westbury, and All Suffolk County forward Tyler Harris of Hills West have both made last minute decisions to transfer to out of state schools for their senior years. Both of their local schools fell just short of winning New York State Championships last season, with Westbury falling in the State Class A Semifinals and Hills West in the Class AA Finals, and both were hoping for return trips upstate this year. The Green Dragons will be hard pressed without Hagigal, but with stars Tavon Sledge and Emile Blackman back, Hills West should still be a serious contender. Tyler Harris will be playing for his third team in the last three years.
