College Recruiting “Hot Tips”

The first thing you have to understand is that although your high school coach will try to help as much as he can, this is your future, and you and your family have to take control and actively begin a search for the right schools. Here are some tips for you:
Have a Game Plan: Sit down and write it out. Make it clear and easy to follow.
Know the Rules: Get an understanding of the NCAA rules and regulations and what you need to qualify for scholarship opportunities at each level.
Research Schools of Interest: Take the time to research the schools of interest to you. Investigate their academic as well as their athletic programs. Research campus living, surrounding area, food choices, transportation, academic support system, health center, etc.
Get Help: Know who to talk to; Coaches (HS, Club, and College), guidance counselors, sports advisors, recruiting coordinators, etc. Know what to ask, and don't hesitate to ask questions !
Make an Informed Decision: Get to know the schools through your research. Ask questions important to your decision making. Understand the financial packages and options offered to you. If you are in contact with the coach, understand the coach’s philosophy and plans he/she has for you. Know what is required of you from the start.
Be Proactive: Once you're ready, don’t wait for them to come find you. Make yourself available to colleges and to the college coaches.
Professional Presentation: Whether in person, over the phone, or with an athletic resume, give a professional presentation of yourself. Know who you are speaking to, have information about the school, have questions pertaining to that institution that you need and want answered already prepared when you make contact.
Don’t Wait: The time to start is now. Don’t wait until the end of your season, or until your Junior or Senior year to get things going, start early and get yourself ahead of the competition.
